🚨 TAX PREPARER FRAUD: THIS IS WHY YOUR TAX PREPARER MATTERS
The IRS just announced that a Memphis tax preparer pleaded guilty to helping prepare false tax returns for clients.
According to the IRS, the preparer reported false items—including fuel tax credits, residential energy credits, and health savings account deductions—to generate inflated refunds for clients.
💰 The returns involved more than $5.4 MILLION in attempted tax fraud.
And here’s the part every taxpayer needs to understand:
👉 “My tax preparer did it” does NOT automatically protect you.
When you sign your tax return, you are ultimately responsible for the information reported on it. A preparer who promises you a huge refund by adding deductions or credits you don’t actually qualify for can put YOU at risk.
Your tax return should be based on:
✔️ Your actual income
✔️ Your actual expenses
✔️ Documentation
✔️ Tax law
✔️ Credits and deductions you genuinely qualify for
Not on, “I can get you a bigger refund.”
As tax professionals, we have a responsibility to protect our clients—not just maximize their refund.
At TaxProLady, I would rather tell you that you don’t qualify for a credit or deduction than put your tax return, your money, or your future at risk.
💡 A bigger refund isn’t always a better tax return. A correct tax return is.
Before hiring a tax professional, ask questions, make sure they are properly credentialed, and don’t be afraid to ask why something is being reported on your return.
Your tax return is worth doing right.
