A lot of people are optimizing for the number on their bank statement.
Unfortunately, when they do that:

They miss some of the most crucial parts of sustaining their wealth.

For example, will their wealth outlive them?
And will it do so in a way that actually benefits their family?

The questions don’t stop there:

Is the plan for transferring their wealth to their beneficiaries tax efficient?

Have they set everything up so it doesn’t create conflict between the people they leave behind?

Transferability concerns like these are just one piece of the puzzle.

Trigger events like taxes, divorces, or liquidity events have to be accounted for too.

Ultimately, making sure you account for all of these things:

Means your money (and your plan) still works…
…even when you aren’t here to actively manage it.

I’ve talked a lot about the importance of having a coordinated structure to protect your wealth.
But sometimes, people think, “I have enough wealth. Everything is working. I’m good.”

My response to that is always to ask two questions:

1. What happens if you find out you owe Uncle Sam a lot of taxes?
2. What if you have a liquidity event: someone buys your business (or your spouse’s business)?

Are you prepared for those scenarios, or any of a hundred others that can impact your wealth?

If you said, “My accountant will handle those things,” I have news for you:

They can’t.

Accountants can’t fix things after the fact.
All they can do is account for them.
And there’s only so many things you can do in the middle of the year

If you’re selling a large business, you need to start preparing well in advance.

And you need to do so in a coordinated way.

Because even if you know what to do, the IRS has lookbacks.

Legally mitigating taxes or dealing with liquidity events requires planning.

It requires hard conversations.

And it requires someone who has a good sense of the big picture.

When you have a high net worth, it’s easy to feel like you have a bubble around you.

But unless you have a coordinated structure in place to protect yourself:

That bubble can easily pop.

There’s a theme we see over and over among our high-net-worth clients.
And it’s one that, if not addressed, can cost them in ways they never imagined.

No matter where their wealth came from, most people who have $2 million+ of net worth:

Have no coordinated structure for how they manage their wealth.

That means, for example, they don’t have a good tax strategy in place.

In other words, they don’t have a plan to protect their assets.

They also don’t have protection against disability.
Or unemployment.
Or growing older.

It’s understandable at a certain level, I guess:

They have millions, so they feel secure.

But that’s a false sense of security.

Bad things inevitably happen:

Taxes.
Divorce.
Getting sued.
Downturns in the economy.

And if you don’t have a coordinated plan for how to mitigate the fallout from events like these:

They will significantly impact your overall net worth.

If you have $2 million or more of net worth, you probably feel secure.
But that sense of security might be a false signal.

If you don’t have a coordinated structure in place to protect your wealth:

You might be in for a rude awakening.

Take steps now to get a coordinated structure in place.

So that no matter what life throws your way:

You’re ready.
