A Roth IRA lets you save for retirement by paying your tax bill now rather than putting it off until later.

What happens to your finances when your income goes up?

• More investing.
At the very least, keep the percentage that you're investing the same. If you were investing 10% of a $150k income, continue investing 10% of your new $170k income.
I like the idea of putting 1/3 of a raise towards savings (which typically means increasing your savings percentage).

• More "lifestyle creep".
Personal finance communities make it sound like a bad thing, it usually isn’t.

Assuming you’re already saving appropriately, when you make more, you can spend more. The point of money is to enjoy it.

Intentionally spend 1/3 of your raise on things that make you happy.

• More taxes.
Your raise may be subject to a higher marginal tax rate, and the higher income may phase you out of certain deductions.

I generally assume 1/3 of the raise will go towards taxes until we know the actual number.

• Less income covered by Social Security.
In 2026, Social Security tax stops once your earned income reaches $184,500.

If your wages are above that amount, consider redirecting the 6.2% in tax savings towards investments and savings.

• New planning opportunities.
As income increases, things like retirement contributions, charitable giving, investment taxes, itemized deductions, and where you hold different investments can make a bigger impact on your overall tax and financial planning.

Revisit your financial plan to make sure your saving, spending, and tax strategies are aligned.

Monthly Market Insights | September 2026 09/04/2026

Markets pushed higher in August as AI-driven optimism helped investors look past softer economic data. The S&P 500 gained 2.62% and the S&P/TSX Composite rose 2.96%, even as softening retail sales kept consumer spending in focus. Back-to-school season adds another data point to that story, with spending expected to reach \$146.8 billion in the U.S. and \$4.5 billion in Canada this year.

Monthly Market Insights | September 2026 The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index advanced 2.62 percent, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 3.93 percent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged, adding 1.34 percent. The S&P/TSX rose 2.96 percent.1,2

“What should I do when my CD comes due?”

I’ve had more clients than usual ask me this recently. When rates were higher, renewing was an easier decision.

The first question I ask: When will you need the money?

If you aren’t sure:

• A high-yield savings account or money market fund can keep the money liquid and ready to use.

If you’ll need it within the next few years:

• Renew the CD if the rate is competitive and the maturity date matches your timeline.

• Move it to another bank or brokerage account if you can find a better rate or term.

• Consider CDs or Treasuries with different maturity dates so the money doesn’t all become available at once.

If you won’t need it for 5+ years:

• Consider investing it for long-term growth. Depending on the investments, this may also be more tax-efficient than CD or money market interest.

Rate matters, but it shouldn’t be all you look at. Think about when you’ll need the money, then look at the rate, liquidity, and taxes.

For example, Treasury interest is exempt from state income tax, CD interest is not.
