Here's what we mean...
Before the IRS can finalize an audit, they are required by law to give you rights to dispute it in federal Tax Court and with an IRS appeals officer.
The letter they'll send to notify you of this is called a "Notice of Deficiency." It gives you the right to take the IRS audit to Tax Court and have an independent judge review it. You'll have 90 days to file a petition to the Tax Court after the IRS sends you the notice of deficiency.
And even if those 90 days have already expired, you may still qualify for "audit reconsideration" instead.

Keep an eye out for these 3 major traps:
๐ฉ Any paid preparer must sign your return and include their PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number). If they tell you to file it yourself as "self-prepared," theyโre dodging accountability for any mistakes (or fraud).
๐ฉ If they charge a percentage of your return, they have a big incentive to tweak the numbers to inflate their own paycheck. Professional fees should be flat or hourly.
๐ฉ No legitimate pro can guarantee a bigger refund than the competition before seeing your docs. "Secret" deductions or fake credits are just audit-bait that will cost you more in penalties later.
Don't let a deal on tax prep turn into a legal nightmare. Search for a tax advisor carefully.
You can start your search right here, with us. We're here to support you this tax season and year-round.

In 2026, the federal filing deadline for calendar-year S Corporations and Partnerships is Monday, March 16th.
โ Your business files its return (March 16th)
โ The IRS receives a copy
โ Owners receive K-1s
โ Owners file personal returns (April 15th)
The K-1 is the bridge between your business and your personal Form 1040. Without it, your personal return canโt be done correctly. Which is why April 15 is step two for you.
And donโt forget to check your specific stateโs filing obligations, as they may be different than federal guidelines.
