The neighbor who “retired fine” isn’t a plan you can borrow. You don’t know his pension, his spouse’s income, his debt, or whether he’s actually fine or just not saying otherwise.

You’d be making 30-year decisions off a highlight reel.

Your taxes, your health, your timeline, the order you draw down your accounts, none of it matches his. Follow the herd and you might feel covered for a while, but you still won’t know if you’re pulling too much from the IRA or overpaying the IRS every April.

Confidence in retirement comes from knowing your own numbers cold. It never comes from matching someone else’s.

If you’re within ten years of retirement, you’ve probably heard an annuity pitch before anyone showed you a plan.

Start with a different question: how much of your monthly spending is already covered by guaranteed income? Social Security, a pension if you have one. An annuity would fill the gap between that number and what you actually spend. If the gap is small or there isn’t one, you may not need an annuity at all.

If your rep brought up an annuity before anyone worked out that gap with you, I’d want that order flipped.

“Guaranteed” is the word that sells annuities. It’s also the word people skip past.

An annuity can guarantee a check shows up every month. What it can’t guarantee is that the check is big enough to cover your life in year one, let alone year 25 after inflation has chipped away at it.

A $4,000 monthly payment feels safe today. If it never rises and your costs do, it buys a lot less by the time you’re 80.

Whether you’ll have enough income for life is a planning question. It gets answered by mapping every source of income, every expense, and every year you’re retired, not by a line on the annuity contract.

If you have a will, you probably think your estate plan is done.

A will does not keep your family out of probate. It does not override the beneficiary form you filled out at Fidelity in 2009. And it does nothing about the tax bill your kids get when they inherit your IRA.

You’ve contributed for decades. The number looks good on paper. The open question is whether what you built transfers the way you intend, or the way the default rules decide.

I’m teaching a two-hour Estate Planning Workshop on Tuesday, September 22 at 1:00pm in Cedar Park. We’ll cover how to keep control of your assets, where the tax exposure sits in a transfer, and the mistakes I see most often in plans that looked finished.

No pitch. Bring your questions. RSVP at the link -> https://app.greminders.com/c/vitalwr/legacyandestate

Say it with me: my lifestyle should define my financial plan, not the other way around.

A 1% fee is worth it for planning. It’s a waste for fund-picking.

If your advisor is choosing funds and rebalancing once a year, you’re paying a planning price for something you could replicate in an afternoon with one index ETF.

The fee earns its keep when someone tells you which accounts to draw from first, how to hold your tax bill down across a 30-year retirement, when to turn on Social Security, and how much you can spend without running out.

Ask your rep to walk you through your withdrawal and tax plan. If what you get back is a portfolio review, you have your answer.

The only finish line that matters is the one you draw yourself.

There’s investing, and then there’s investing like you know what you’re doing. It’s okay to not know the difference, but now that you’re aware…👀
