NATIONAL HERO DAY
National Hero Day on October 8 honors the real-life heroes who inspire us to be the best person we can possibly be. Today, let's spend a little extra time thanking those who go above and beyond to care for those who need help.

If asked to define the word hero, many of us will name the qualities that demand a person rise above. The kind of qualities that genuinely drive a person to be stronger, smarter, kinder and more than the average human being. They are the people who give when they have nothing to give. Heroes act before anyone else realizes there's a problem. They volunteer to put someone else before them.

Our heroes may be the first responders who save us from a dangerous situation. They may be a mentor, like a parent or a teacher. As role models, heroes guide us through the examples they set. They live their lives in such a way that we're honored to know them and hope to live up to their example.

Unfortunately, real-life heroes rarely get recognized. Many of us take for granted the services these individuals provide in our homes, schools, communities, and country. That's why National Hero Day encourages you to recognize the heroes in your life.

Heroes All Around Us
Some wear uniforms, like Christy McIntosh of Pensacola, Florida, who served in the U.S. Army Reserves. Or like high-school football player Zac Clark of Ohio, whose quick thinking and strength lifted a Volkswagen off of his neighbor, saving his life.

Other heroes spur us to action or to lead a better life. They may do this through their words like Jim Cook of Oklahoma who wrote to columnist Jim Priest, teaching him a little something about character and love. A real-life hero might take us on a journey we can only imagine taking. Like Dr. Garrett Reisman, a former NASA astronaut and engineer who later joined SpaceX.

Another kind of hero makes things happen. Whether it's filling a need or making the impossible happen, some heroes go to amazing lengths to get a job done. For example, Donald Harris of New Jersey, who by day was a real estate manager but at Christmastime answered a letter to Santa via the U.S. Postal Service's Letters to Santa program. His answer to a request to make a father's life easier was to enlist his associates in obtaining a townhouse for the family at a much lower rent.

Heroes come in many forms, you see. They rescue us, inspire us, and most of all, they believe in us.

8 WAYS TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL HERO DAY
National Hero Day presents opportunity for us to honor the heroes in our lives. Who are your heroes? Let the world know by using to share on social media.

NATIONAL PROPANE DAY
It's October 7 on the National Day Calendar and we are celebrating propane suppliers across the country today! National Propane Day gives us the opportunity to dedicate an entire day to a group of small business owners who provide propane to their customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It also allows us to share amazing information about the benefits of using propane.

There are over 3,500 propane suppliers across the United States. Most of these suppliers are small, family-owned and operated small businesses that provide propane services to local communities. Oftentimes, propane supplies take extraordinary measures to keep their customers and their families safe and warm during natural disasters and power outages. Let's use October 7 as a way to show our appreciation to the propane suppliers in your area and learn a few facts about this eco-friendly alternative.

Fun Fact About National Propane Day
The chemical designation for propane is 1075, which is why the Propane Education & Research Council cleverly selected October 7 (10/7) as the date for National Propane Day.

Propane is a gas normally compressed and stored as a liquid. Sometimes known as liquified petroleum gas (LPG), propane is a common product we use for space and water heating, cooking, and as fuel for engine applications. Machinery such as forklifts, farm irrigation engines, fleet vehicles, and buses all use propane to operate.

Did you know propane is found in the 1990 Clean Air Act? It's true. Propane is a great substitute for gas and fuel oil. It not only reduces the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, it also reduces air pollutants like carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide. In fact, propane is an economical step towards cleaner air. Most importantly, propane is a safe and reliable product for every day use and provides a safe, healthy environment by reducing emissions.

Propane Beginnings
In 1910, Chemist Walter Snelling accidentally discovered propane after watching a gasoline jug cork pop off, calling it "wild gas." By 1913, Snelling was awarded patent number 1,056,845 for LP gas. His further research during the 1920s and 1930s would help pave the way for use of propane in homes, equipment, and vehicles.

As propane use became more widely acceptable during the 1930s, a rotten egg odor (ethyl mercaptan) was added to propane. This additive would allow consumers to detect a propane leak easier. Because propane is an odorless chemical, detection of leaks was difficult up to this point. Today, propane is safely used in homes, for appliances, and machinery.

5 Propane Facts
The U.S. produces over 90% of propane, which is reducing our dependence on foreign oil.

Propane is energy efficient. In fact, using propane for your furnace instead of conventional electricity may reduce your energy by up to 90%.

As a nontoxic chemical, propane will not harm soil, water, or animals. However, propane is highly flammable and classified as an asphyxiant. This means it an be dangerous in exposure to high concentrations. Luckily, the rotten egg additive makes it easy to identify.

Propane freezes at negative 44 degrees Fahrenheit, making it a great heating choice during harsh winters.

As a clean burning fuel, propane is reduces emissions into the air. This cleaner alternative is affordable for consumers.

How is propane produced? Interestingly, propane comes from natural gas and crude oil products. As a liquid, byproduct propane is first extracted from wellhead gas at processing plants. which allows natural gas to flow better in pipelines. During the extraction process, the capture of other gases like butane and ethane also happen. Though some propane byproducts are sold globally, most propane is kept in the U.S. for heating, cooking, appliances, and standby power.

CELEBRATE THE POWER OF PROPANE
We've dedicated an entire day to celebrating propane suppliers across the country. Here are a few ways to celebrate National Propane Day:

NATIONAL MAD HATTER DAY
October 6 is a day set aside each year to bring out your silly side while celebrating National Mad Hatter Day.

The fictional character, The Hatter (also known as The Mad Hatter) from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, is typically acting silly, and that is how the creators of this day decided on their theme of silliness for National Mad Hatter Day. Sir John Tenniel illustrated The Mad Hatter and all of Lewis Carroll's colorful characters beginning in 1864. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1865.

💡
Did you know?
The phrase "mad as a hatter" comes from the late 18th and early 19th centuries when haberdasheries used mercury nitrate. The exposure to this metal over time caused the tradesmen to develop symptoms making people believe they were mad.

Taking our inspiration from The Mad Hatter (or any of Carroll's characters for that matter) we may pursue laughable, absurd, or even confusing adventures on National Mad Hatter Day. Breakout from the usual routine. Ask ridiculous riddles much like The Hatter's own, "Why is a raven like a writing desk?" Play croquet with plastic pink flamingos or wear a funny hat to work. Celebrate the day with silliness!

The Hatter's Riddle
Lewis Carroll (a pen name for Charles Lutwidge Dodson) once answered The Hatter's riddle. In the 1896 edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Carroll wrote as part of his preface, "Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is nevar put with the wrong end in front!"

5 FUN WAYS TO OBSERVE MAD HATTER DAY
Several ideas come to mind for celebrating this fun holiday. For one, grab yourself a top hat and let your silliness out! Try these other fun ideas:

Whatever you do, be sure to invite others to join in the fun. It's the best way to and use to post on social media.

Attend a production of Alice in Wonderland.

Tell absurd riddles to family, friends, and workmates.

Read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland or watch an Alice in Wonderland movie.

Host a Mad Hatter themed tea or dinner party.

NATIONAL CHILD HEALTH DAY
In the United States, National Child Health Day occurs each year on the first Monday in October. The day recognizes the care and guidance children need to grow strong and healthy.

Each child deserves to be the healthiest he or she can be. From the food they eat to the words they hear, children require support and opportunities to grow. Parents often worry about chronic disease, accidents or childhood illnesses. At the same time, they focus on a child's mental health and general health. Whether it's their environment, the food they eat or how much TV they watch, the day is an excellent opportunity to support the children in your life.

HOW TO OBSERVE CHILD HEALTH DAY
Go for a walk, play in a park, do some yard work or participate in activities to promote child health. Other ways to participate in the day include:

Schedule your child's next routine checkup.

Ensure vaccinations are up to date.

Schedule a routine dental checkup.

Add new healthy activities to your children's routine.

Set an example by letting your children catch you in healthy habits.

Inspect your child's toys. Are they broken or age-appropriate?

Share your best tips for helping your children live a healthy lifestyle.

While you're celebrating, be sure to use to post on social media.

We have been getting a lot of feedback lately regarding Cluster Box Units (CBU's) and why are we funding for these. Pretty simple. Back in 2012, the USPS turned over responsibility of ALL mailboxes and CBU's to the customer.

• Property Owner / HOA / Property Manager: Owns the physical structure and is responsible for buying, installing, repairing, and replacing damaged compartments, pedestals, parcel lockers, and tenant locks or keys. On platforms like Reddit r/HOA, opinions and experiences vary on who installed the original units, but associations commonly absorb the upkeep post-turnover.
• United States Postal Service (USPS): Delivers mail to the units, approves their placement for compliance, and maintains the master access door (Arrow lock). The USPS generally does not repair or replace the physical housing or individual tenant lock compartments of private units

These can be very costly, often $2500+ per CBU, so do not ignore this line item in your Reserve Study and be sure to fund for eventual replacement.
