IR-2023-131, July 21, 2023 — The Internal Revenue Service warned taxpayers today to be on the lookout for a summer surge of tax scams as identity thieves continue pounding out a barrage of email and text messages promising tax refunds or offers to help ‘fix’ tax problems.

Don’t fall victim to this latest tax refund scam.

The letter, which comes in a cardboard envelope, is designed to trick people into believing that they are owed a refund, the tax agency said. The agency said there is an IRS masthead on the letter and says the notice is "in relation to your unclaimed refund."
The letter includes contact information, but the phone number is NOT an IRS phone number.

It never hurts to verify with the real IRS on 800-829-1040 about the legitimacy of any correspondence received. You can also consult with your tax professional about suspicious correspondence.
