📌 SAVE THIS: the 3 IRS notices you never let sit.

1️⃣ CP14 — "You owe us." First balance-due notice. The clock starts, the balance grows.
2️⃣ CP504 — "We intend to levy." First target is usually your STATE tax refund. No hearing right comes with this one — the response window is 30 days.
3️⃣ LT11 — "Final notice." This is the one WITH hearing rights — a critical exit before bank and wage levies (the hearing must be requested within 30 days).

Same envelope size. Very different clocks.

Day 13 past the October 15 deadline. ⏰

Oct 15 was the final deadline. The late-FILING penalty runs 5% a month — and a return filed more than 60 days late can hit a minimum penalty of the lesser of $525 or 100% of the tax you owe.

So, honestly: have you filed yet?

👇 Vote: YES, FILED / NOT YET

Filed but can't pay? That's the cheaper clock — 0.5% a month — and it's the one a plan can potentially address. Free 15-minute case review with a live licensed CPA: https://www.taxcpa.com/booking.html

TRUE or FALSE? 💼

"The business owes the payroll tax — the IRS can't touch me personally."

FALSE. And it's the most expensive false in small business.

Payroll taxes withheld from employees' paychecks are trust fund money. Under the Trust Fund Recovery Penalty, the IRS can assess 100% of that unpaid trust fund amount against the owner — personally. The business entity doesn't shield it.

👇 Vote before you scrolled: did you say TRUE or FALSE?

Behind on 941s? Potentially resolvable — but the personal clock is the one that matters. Free 15-minute case review: https://www.taxcpa.com/booking.html

LEGAL, SKETCHY, or JAIL? 💼 Business-owner edition.

Paying yourself a reasonable S-corp salary first, then taking distributions → LEGAL ✅ (reasonable depends on your role, industry, and profit)
Setting that salary at the rock-bottom edge of "reasonable" → SKETCHY ⚠️ (gray area — decided on your facts, not your hopes)
Just not reporting cash income → JAIL 🚨 (if intent to evade is proven)
Padding the mileage log with personal trips → JAIL 🚨 (if intent to evade is proven)

Got a CP14? Read this before you pay it — or ignore it. ✉️

CP14 is the IRS's FIRST balance-due notice. It says: here's what our math shows you owe, including penalties and interest.

Three things it is NOT:
❌ Not a final enforcement action like a levy
❌ Not final (if the math is wrong, you can dispute it)
❌ Not ignorable (the balance grows while it sits)

A CPA who hid money from the IRS — while asking the IRS for a payment plan. 💼

Florida CPA Ronald St. Clair got 18 months in prison for evading payment of more than $2.2 million in income taxes (debts from 2011–2017).

In 2020, after the IRS told him it intended to levy his assets, he sold real property and moved the proceeds into a bank account in a third party's name — kept using the money, and never disclosed it while seeking a payment plan.

He pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion and was ordered to pay $2,343,615.01 in restitution.

Owing the IRS is a problem you negotiate. Hiding assets while you negotiate is the crime.

Quick vote: What made it a prison sentence?
A) Owing $2.2 million
B) Hiding assets while asking for a payment plan

He was the founder, the president, the treasurer, the secretary, AND the chairman. There was nobody else. 🚩

Michael Kahn — former majority owner of the Charlotte Checkers — ran his family foundation completely alone. Between 2020 and 2023, he moved more than $4.5 million out of it… to himself. And he failed to report those funds as income on his 2020 tax return.

On Monday he pleaded guilty in federal court to aiding and assisting in the preparation of a false tax return. He now faces up to 3 years in prison at sentencing. Sentencing date: not set yet.

The IRS-CI line on this one: “Tax-exempt organizations are granted special status to serve charitable purposes, not to enrich those who control them.”

VOTE: one person holding every title at his own foundation — 🚩 Red flag from day one, or 👍 Normal for a family foundation?
