🚨 Two Days Left: Extended 1040 Returns Are Due October 15!

The extension finish line is almost here.

Most taxpayers who timely requested an extension must file their 2025 Form 1040 by Thursday, October 15.

If LL&T is preparing your return, please send any remaining documents or requested information immediately. Missing items could delay completion and filing.

Remember: an extension provided additional time to file, not additional time to pay. If you expect to owe, filing promptly and paying as much as possible can help limit additional penalties and interest.

Check your email and document portal today. If LL&T has requested information, send it now or contact our team immediately with questions. https://www.lltcpas.com/contact

Moving to Another State? Don’t Leave Tax Planning Behind!

A new address can bring new opportunities, and a surprisingly complicated tax situation.

Before moving to another state, consider:

- How your new state taxes income
- Whether your move establishes a new domicile
- How remote work could create filing obligations in multiple states
- Whether you’ll need part-year resident returns
- How retirement income, investments and capital gains will be treated

Simply buying a home in a lower-tax state may not end your tax obligations in your former state. Where you spend your time and maintain your personal, financial and family connections can all matter.

Planning a move? Talk with LL&T before packing the last box. Early planning may help prevent residency disputes, filing complications and unexpected tax bills.

Paid family and medical leave may now provide more value to eligible employers.

Recent Treasury and IRS guidance addresses the expanded Employer Credit for Paid Family and Medical Leave. Beginning in 2026, qualifying employers may be able to claim a general business tax credit ranging from 12.5% to 25% for up to 12 weeks of qualifying leave.

Key changes include:

- The credit is now permanent.
- Employees may qualify after six months of service.
- Certain part-time employees working at least 20 hours per week may be included.
- Employers may calculate the credit using qualifying wages or paid-leave insurance premiums.
- Certain state- or locally mandated leave may count toward eligibility, although not toward calculating the federal credit.

The opportunity is promising, but eligibility, documentation and calculation requirements matter.

Does your business provide - or plan to introduce - paid family and medical leave?

Read our overview, then speak with LL&T about whether the expanded credit could apply to your organization: https://www.lltcpas.com/resources/quick-reads/treasury-irs-provide-guidance-on-paid-family-and-medical-leave-tax-credit

Sales tax rules are changing and not just the rates.

The combined average U.S. sales tax rate has reached a 10-year high of 10.1881%. During the first half of 2026 alone, there were 463 combined sales tax rate changes and newly introduced rates.

At the same time, jurisdictions are reconsidering:

- Which products and services are taxable
- How digital transactions are treated
- Where businesses create tax obligations
- How quickly companies must respond to new rules

For businesses operating in multiple locations or selling services and digital products, sales tax is becoming an increasingly important part of strategic planning, not simply a filing-time task.

Is your sales tax process keeping pace?

Helping Animals? Keep the Giving Records Too. 🐾

For World Animal Day, many people may choose to support a shelter, rescue or animal-welfare organization.

If charitable giving is part of your plans:

🐾 Confirm the organization’s tax-exempt status
🐾 Keep receipts and acknowledgment letters
🐾 Document noncash contributions
🐾 Avoid organizations requesting unusual payment methods
🐾 Remember that generosity and deductibility are not always the same thing

Support the causes you care about—and keep a clear paper trail while you do it.

Tag or name an animal-welfare organization doing meaningful work in your community.

Tax Tools Just Became More Mobile 📱

Saturday tax tip: The IRS recently launched a new mobile app that replaces IRS2Go and expands access to several online services.

Depending on the available feature, taxpayers may be able to use their phones to access IRS tools, account information and other services more conveniently.

A quick reminder: Download government apps only from trusted app stores, verify the publisher and never share tax information through an unexpected text or email link.

Convenience is good. Convenience paired with caution is even better.

Review the tax apps on your phone today. Delete anything questionable and visit IRS.gov directly for verified information.

You Know What Makes an Accountant Smile? 😄

In honor of World Smile Day, here are a few things that make accountants especially happy:

😁 Bank accounts that reconcile
😁 Receipts that are actually saved
😁 Business and personal expenses kept separate
😁 Payroll reports submitted on time
😁 Clients who don’t wait until October 14 to send their tax documents

Okay, that last one makes us smile a lot.

Good financial habits may not be glamorous, but they can create cleaner records, better information and fewer surprises.

Your entire bookkeeping system does not need to be rebuilt today.

Instead, set a timer for 15 minutes and complete one task:

📧 Save receipts from your inbox
📸 Scan paper receipts
🏦 Review uncategorized transactions
💳 Separate personal and business purchases
📂 Create a folder for September records

When the timer ends, stop. Small, repeatable habits are much easier than a year-end rescue mission.

Save this checklist, set the timer and comment “done” when your 15-minute reset is complete.

Happy National Pancake Day!

A tall stack of pancakes? Excellent.

A tall stack of uncategorized business receipts? .....Slightly less delightful.

Consistent bookkeeping helps you:

🥞 Track deductible expenses
🥞 Monitor cash flow
🥞 Prepare more accurate financial reports
🥞 Avoid a year-end paperwork scramble

Like breakfast, bookkeeping is easier to manage one serving—or one month—at a time.

Before ordering another stack, categorize five business expenses. What’s your recordkeeping style: digital folders, paper files or the infamous receipt drawer?

On Extension? The Clock Is Ticking!

October 15 is now less than three weeks away. ⏰
If your individual tax return is on extension, now is the time to find the document you were absolutely certain you put “somewhere safe.”

Your weekend checklist:

- Look for missing income statements
- Gather business or rental-property records
- Organize charitable-contribution documentation
- Locate investment cost-basis information
- Send outstanding documents to your tax professional

Remember: an extension provided more time to file, NOT more time to keep hiding from that paperwork pile.

Find and send one missing document today. Your future self (and your tax preparer) will thank you.
