October is Women-Owned Small Business Month, and I'm proud to be one.

MSW Accounting was built by a woman who spent over 20 years doing the work before she ever put her name on the door. It started with a bachelor's degree in accounting with honors, earned on an academic scholarship while working full time. Then came years at a CPA firm, financial statement work for a large publicly traded company, 8 years at one of the largest payroll processors in the country, and 2 separate roles as controller.

If you filed an extension this spring, the clock runs out this Thursday, October 15.

Extended individual returns and calendar year C corporation returns are both due. The extension gave you more time, but your CPA still needs complete, reconciled bookkeeping records to file an accurate return, and 2 days isn't much of a cushion.

If your records still aren't where your CPA needs them, reach out to your CPA today, not Wednesday night.

And if this is the 2nd year in a row you've been racing an October deadline, that's worth fixing. When your bookkeeping stays current all year, October is just another month.

Glasses on.

Over 20 years into this career, and I'm still learning something new every week.

Tax rules change. QuickBooks rolls out updates. New tools show up that can save my clients time, or cause a real mess if they're set up wrong. Staying current isn't optional in this work. It's part of the job.

I earned my bachelor's degree in accounting with honors, and I'm an Advanced QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor. The learning didn't stop when I got the degree, and that's a big part of why I catch the things a quick online course would never teach you.
