Mid-Year Bump in IRS Mileage Rates 🚗
The IRS has adjusted its standard mileage rates mid-year, effective July 1, 2026, in response to rising gas prices. Here's the breakdown:
📊 Rate Changes
Business: 72.5¢ → 76¢/mile
Medical/Moving: 20.5¢ → 23.5¢/mile
Charitable: 14¢/mile (unchanged — set by statute)
Since this change falls mid-year, it's important to split your mileage logs based on whether trips happened before or after July 1. Using the wrong rate for the wrong period could mean under- or overstating your deduction.
Not sure how this affects your return? Our team is here to help you sort it out.

Closing out our intern spotlight series is Andrew Madden, an Accounting student at the University of New Hampshire.
Andrew first connected with Walter Shuffain at a UNH career fair, where a staff member made the firm feel like a real community rather than just another accounting firm. That impression has held true throughout the summer, from team meetings and outings to community service events. 🌟
This summer, Andrew has become more comfortable using the firm’s software, including Engagement and Tax, while also growing his Excel skills. He was especially surprised by how much tax work he’s been involved in — including 1065s, K-1s, and 1041s — and by how much he’s enjoyed it.
Best advice he’s received: Take the time to get to know the people you work with.
Go-to coffee order: Dunkin’ medium iced black coffee 🧊☕

Christopher was drawn to Walter Shuffain because of the firm’s culture and the variety of clients it serves, especially in real estate. 🏢 This summer, he’s been building his ability to read and understand financial statements and tax returns, while gaining valuable exposure to large and complex returns.
A highlight of the experience for Christopher has been seeing the full process behind major tax work and learning through each step of it.
Best advice he’s received: Ask a lot of questions and meet as many new people as possible.

In today’s spotlight, meet Nolan Reilly, an Accounting and Financial Management double major at Clemson University.
Nolan chose Walter Shuffain for the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in both tax and audit at a well-respected firm. Over the course of the summer, he’s been sharpening his Excel skills and learning new accounting software systems. 📈
What has surprised him most is how much real client work he’s been able to support, from company audits to tax returns. That kind of exposure has made a meaningful impact on his internship experience.
Best advice he’s received: Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Benji chose Walter Shuffain for the rare opportunity to gain hands-on experience in both Audit and Tax. This summer, he’s also been excited to incorporate the firm’s AI agent into his workflow and see how much of a difference it can make. 🤖
One thing that has stood out to him is how deeply the team knows their clients. Even the most specific questions are met with thoughtful, detailed answers.

Today we’re spotlighting Connor Williams, an Accounting student at Syracuse University.
Connor chose Walter Shuffain because of the firm’s core value of continuous development and the chance to keep learning through meaningful, hands-on experience. This summer, he’s been focused on becoming a more proactive communicator and building confidence in collaboration across teams. 🤝
Something that has stood out to him is how much there is to learn beyond the technical side of the job, especially when it comes to professional communication and relationship-building in the workplace.
Best advice he’s received: Building relationships and connections in the workplace is just as important as building technical skills.
