Institute of Management Accountants - Boston Chapter

. The organization was first organized as the "National Association of Cost Accountants" on October 13-14, 1919. Six people from the Boston area were among the 36 who attended the first ever meeting of individuals devoted to the science of cost accounting. By the end of two days, a new organization was formed with several individuals from the Boston area serving on its first Board of Directors. On February 25, 1920 the Boston chapter was formed and was officially charted as a chapter of the NACA in April 1920. In 1957, the organization, recognizing the diversity of its membership, changed its name to the National Association of Accountants. In 1991, again due to changing roles of its members, changed its name to the Institute of Management Accountants. Now it is currently referred to as IMA. Over the past 80 years, the chapter size swelled to over 1,200 members and in the 60's and 70's spun off several other Massachusetts Chapters. The Boston Chapter has produced several National presidents of the organization along with numerous National Vice Presidents and National Directors. The Chapter has won several National awards and banners for it works. Currently, the Chapter serves its members by holding monthly Educational Dinner meetings and other professional development seminars in collaboration with the other Massachusetts based chapters. Its members range from Chief Financial Officers of Corporations to staff accountants. Its members come from diverse sectors including: private industry, public accounting, banking, insurance, education, non-profit and government. A voluntary Board of Directors currently serves us. In addition, other volunteer opportunities exist, and the Chapter openly welcomes new members.
