📉 An investment loss isn't always just a loss.

As we approach year-end, it may be worth reviewing whether some losses in your taxable investment accounts could play a role in your broader tax strategy.

That's where tax-loss harvesting comes in.

A realized investment loss may potentially help:

✔️ Offset eligible capital gains
✔️ Offset a limited amount of ordinary income when losses exceed gains
✔️ Create capital-loss carryforwards for future years
✔️ Provide an opportunity to rebalance your portfolio

But there's an important catch:

You shouldn't make an investment decision solely for the tax benefit.

Wash-sale rules, your overall portfolio, future investment opportunities, and your individual tax situation all matter.

Our latest blog explains what investors should consider before year-end.

⚖️ When it comes to inheritance, equal and fair aren't always the same thing.

One child provided years of care. Another received significant financial help earlier in life. One inherits a Roth IRA while another receives a Traditional IRA or real estate.

The numbers may look equal on paper—but the outcome can be very different.

A thoughtful estate plan may need to consider:

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family caregiving
💰 Lifetime financial gifts
📊 Taxes on inherited assets
📄 Beneficiary designations
🏠 Different types of property
💬 Communication with your family

Estate planning isn't only about deciding who gets what.

It's also about making your intentions clear enough that your family understands why.

⏳ There may be a tax-planning window hiding in the early years of retirement.

For some retirees, taxable income drops after the paycheck stops—but before Social Security and required minimum distributions become part of the picture.

That period may create an opportunity to evaluate strategies such as partial Roth conversions.

But the goal isn't simply to convert as much as possible.

You have to consider:

💰 Your current tax bracket
📈 Potential future income
📅 Social Security timing
💊 Medicare premiums
📊 Future RMDs
🏦 Where the money to pay the tax will come from

The bigger lesson?

The goal isn't necessarily to pay the least tax this year. It's to evaluate the potential tax impact across your retirement.

Our latest blog explores this often-overlooked retirement tax window.

📁 You created a living trust. But are your assets actually connected to it?

Creating the legal document may only be one part of the estate-planning process.

A living trust generally needs to be funded—meaning appropriate assets need to be transferred or coordinated with the trust according to your estate plan.

That could involve:

🏠 Real estate
🏦 Bank accounts
📈 Non-retirement investment accounts
💼 Business interests
📋 Beneficiary designations
🖼️ Certain personal property

And here's where things can get complicated: not every asset should necessarily be handled the same way.

Retirement accounts, for example, generally require careful beneficiary coordination rather than simply changing the account owner to your living trust.

Our latest blog explains why trust funding matters, some of the commonly overlooked details, and why your attorney, financial advisor and tax professional may need to work together.

🌴 Where you retire can affect more than your view.

For many people, moving to Florida is part of the retirement dream—but choosing where in Florida can be a much bigger decision.

Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Marco Island and other Southwest Florida communities can offer very different combinations of:

🏡 Housing and everyday expenses
🏖️ Beach and boating access
⛳ Golf and recreation
🏥 Healthcare access
🍽️ Dining, shopping and entertainment
💰 Taxes and ongoing housing costs
🌴 Overall lifestyle

And that's where financial planning comes into the picture.

The question isn't simply:

“Where would I like to live?”

It's also:

“What will the life I want to live there actually cost?”

Our latest blog explores several popular Southwest Florida retirement destinations and some of the financial and lifestyle considerations to think about before making a move.

❤️ If charitable giving is already part of your life, could your IRA be part of how you give?

For eligible IRA owners age 70½ or older, a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) can allow money to be sent directly from an IRA to an eligible charity. A qualifying QCD generally isn't included in taxable income and can count toward an IRA owner's required minimum distribution when an RMD applies.

That can make charitable giving an important conversation within a broader retirement and tax plan.

Before giving, consider:

❤️ Which organizations you want to support
📆 Whether you have an RMD to satisfy
💰 How the gift could affect taxable income
📑 QCD eligibility and documentation requirements
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Your broader estate and legacy goals

Giving is personal.

How you give can be part of the planning.

Our newest blog looks at charitable giving from IRAs and how philanthropy can fit into retirement planning.
