PT practice owners: Quick question as we head into Q4.

Which of these feels hardest to get a handle on right now?

A. How much I'm actually going to owe in taxes
B. Whether there's anything I can still do before year-end to lower my tax bill
C. How much cash I should keep in the business vs. take out
D. Whether I'm paying myself the right amount
E. Something else — tell me below

I'm curious what feels most unclear right now.

I recently launched A Better Measure, a new publication for profitable business owners who want to make better decisions about what their money is actually building.⁣
⁣
Because earning more profit is one thing.⁣
⁣
Knowing what to do with it — how much to keep, what to reserve for taxes, what to invest, what to put toward retirement, and how to turn business success into greater freedom — is another.⁣
⁣
Through Monday, September 14 at noon MT, I’m offering my Practice Strategy Founder Membership for $397 (normally $497).⁣
⁣
It includes a full year of paid access to A Better Measure, plus a private Profit & Purpose Planning Session with me.⁣
⁣
We’ll look at your business, your profit, your priorities, and the financial decisions in front of you — and identify what deserves your attention next.⁣
⁣
If your business is profitable but you’re wondering what your next financial move should be, this is exactly the kind of work I created A Better Measure to help with.⁣
⁣
The Founder offer ends Monday, September 14 at noon MT.⁣

Growing revenue is one thing. Knowing what to do with the profit is another.⁣

How much should stay in the practice?⁣
How much should you reserve for taxes?⁣
How much can you safely pay yourself?⁣
Should extra cash go toward debt, investing, retirement, or growth?⁣

Your PT practice had its best revenue year ever.⁣
⁣
So why don't you feel like you're making any more money?⁣
⁣
This is one of the biggest disconnects I see with growing practices.⁣
⁣
Revenue goes up.⁣
⁣
More patients. More providers. More payroll. More complexity.⁣
⁣
And the owner assumes:⁣
⁣
𝐈𝐟 𝐰𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐈'𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲.⁣
⁣
But revenue isn't the number that tells you whether your business is actually creating more financial freedom for you.⁣
⁣
Before you set another growth goal, pull your numbers and compare just three things to last year:⁣
⁣
Revenue.⁣
Net profit.⁣
What actually made it to you as the owner. (Salary + Distributions)⁣
⁣
If revenue grew 20% but the other two barely moved, you don't necessarily have a growth problem.⁣
⁣
You have something much more useful:⁣
⁣
**a clue about where to look next.**⁣
⁣
A bigger practice isn't automatically a better business.⁣
⁣
The goal is to build a business that actually works for the life you're trying to create.⁣

Growing your PT practice is one thing. 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 of what you build is another.⁣
⁣
You can grow revenue, see more patients, build a great team and still find yourself wondering:⁣
⁣
Why is my tax bill always a surprise?⁣
Why doesn't the cash seem to match the revenue?⁣
When does all this hard work start creating real financial freedom?⁣
⁣
I created a free guide specifically for growing PT practice owners:⁣
⁣
**The 7 Tax Strategies Every Growing PT Practice Should Implement**⁣
⁣
Inside, I walk through 7 areas worth paying attention to as your practice grows including proactive tax planning, entity structure, compensation, the financial numbers that actually matter, and using tax strategy to help build long-term wealth.⁣
⁣
It's a practical 15-minute read designed to help you identify where your next financial decision could have the biggest impact.⁣

PT Practice Owners: Where are you trying to go and is “more” actually getting you there?⁣
⁣
As business owners, we're constantly encouraged to grow.⁣
⁣
More revenue. More profit. More clients. More locations. A bigger team.⁣
⁣
And there's nothing wrong with growth.⁣
⁣
But for PT practice owners, I think there's a question worth asking before automatically setting the next revenue goal:⁣
⁣
What is the growth actually for?⁣
⁣
I've seen businesses grow revenue substantially without becoming more profitable—or giving the owner any more freedom.⁣
⁣
Sometimes growth creates exactly what we hoped it would: more profit, greater impact, a business that can operate without us, and more freedom.⁣
⁣
And sometimes it just creates more revenue, more employees, more complexity and more responsibility.⁣
⁣
So maybe the question isn't simply:⁣
⁣
“How do I get to the next number?”⁣
⁣
Maybe it's:⁣
⁣
“Where am I trying to go and is more actually getting me there?”⁣
⁣
I explored this more today in today's 𝘈 𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘔𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 on Substack:⁣

Every dollar your business earns has a job.⁣
⁣
Some should pay taxes.⁣
⁣
Some should build reserves.⁣
⁣
Some should be reinvested.⁣
⁣
Some should build wealth outside the business.⁣
⁣
And some should be given away.⁣
⁣
The goal isn't to spend everything your business produces.⁣
⁣
The goal is to steward it wisely so it creates greater freedom, greater opportunity, and greater impact.⁣

The Revenue Trap: Why a Busy PT Practice Can Still Be Broke⁣
⁣
Your schedule is full.⁣
⁣
New patients are coming in.⁣
⁣
Revenue is higher than it's ever been.⁣
⁣
So why does it still feel like there's never enough money?⁣
⁣
If you've ever wondered that, you're not alone.⁣
⁣
One of the biggest mistakes I see PT practice owners make is assuming that more revenue automatically means a healthier business.⁣
⁣
It doesn't.⁣
⁣
I've worked with businesses that generated over $1 million a year and still felt like they were living month to month.⁣
⁣
Here's why.⁣
⁣
Revenue is simply the money that comes in the door.⁣
⁣
It doesn't tell you:⁣
⁣
* How much you're actually keeping.⁣
* Whether your payroll is too high.⁣
* If you're underpricing your services.⁣
* Whether your tax bill is quietly eating your profits.⁣
* If you're paying yourself what's left over instead of what you've intentionally planned.⁣
⁣
When you only watch revenue, it's like driving a car while staring at the speedometer.⁣
⁣
You're moving...⁣
⁣
But you have no idea if you're about to run out of gas.⁣
⁣
The practices that consistently build wealth don't obsess over top-line revenue.⁣
⁣
They know their numbers.⁣
⁣
They understand where every dollar goes.⁣
⁣
They make decisions based on profit, cash flow, and the handful of key metrics that actually predict financial health.⁣
⁣
Revenue creates excitement.⁣
⁣
Profit creates freedom.⁣
⁣
If your practice is growing but your bank account isn't, the answer usually isn't "work harder."⁣
⁣
It's getting clarity on what your numbers are trying to tell you.⁣
⁣
**Question:** Have you ever had a month where revenue looked great, but your bank account told a completely different story?⁣

It's July 1.⁣⁣Half the year is gone.⁣⁣Here's the question every PT practice owner should be asking...⁣⁣If you keep doing...
07/01/2026

It's July 1.⁣
⁣
Half the year is gone.⁣
⁣
Here's the question every PT practice owner should be asking...⁣
⁣
If you keep doing exactly what you've been doing for the next six months...⁣
⁣
Will you be happy with where your practice ends up on December 31?⁣
⁣
Most owners immediately think:⁣
⁣
I need more patients.⁣
I need another therapist.⁣
I need better marketing.⁣
⁣
But before any of that, I'd look at the fundamentals.⁣
⁣
Every successful practice eventually has to answer questions like:⁣
⁣
• Am I consistently profitable?⁣
• Do I know which numbers actually matter at my current stage of growth?⁣
• Is cash flow improving, or am I just getting busier?⁣
• Am I making decisions based on data or just hoping things work out?⁣
⁣
The biggest breakthroughs usually don't come from chasing the next shiny strategy.⁣
⁣
They come from mastering the basics.⁣
⁣
July is the perfect time to pause, evaluate, and make small adjustments before year-end.⁣
⁣
Six months is plenty of time to change your financial trajectory.⁣
⁣
What's one financial or business question you're wrestling with as we head into the second half of the year? ⁣
⁣
Drop it below, and I'll do my best to help.

06/29/2026

I'm curious how other physical therapy practice owners think about this...⁣
⁣
If your practice generated an extra $100,000 in profit this year, what would you do first?⁣
⁣
A. Hire another PT⁣
⁣
B. Pay yourself more⁣
⁣
C. Open another location⁣
⁣
D. Invest outside the business⁣
⁣
