As our Nonprofit Numbers Explained series continues, we’re taking a closer look at one of the most commonly misunderstood program efficiency metrics: cost per outcome.
At first glance, a low cost per outcome may seem like a sign of an efficient program. But without the right context, the metric can tell an incomplete story.
⚠️ Staff may be stretched too thin to maintain service quality
⚠️ Programs may lack sufficient follow-up or depth of support
⚠️ Activities may prioritize volume over meaningful, long-term outcomes
⚠️ Low costs may depend on workloads or practices that are not sustainable
It’s also important to understand exactly what is being measured. A meaningful cost-per-outcome analysis requires clearly defined outcomes and accurate allocation of the costs associated with delivering the program.
Some high-touch, high-impact programs simply cost more to operate—and that does not necessarily make them inefficient.
The more important question is: Are the resources being invested producing meaningful, sustainable results consistent with the organization’s mission and priorities?
At Goldin Group Advisors, we help nonprofits build the financial reporting, budgeting, and program-level analysis needed to understand not only what programs cost, but how those costs relate to performance, sustainability, and organizational priorities.
Because the best financial metrics don’t just measure efficiency—they give nonprofit leaders better information for decision-making.
