There’s a lot of pressure to get money “right.”

To know what you’re doing. Make the right decisions. Have all the answers.

But you don’t need to become a financial expert before you can make good decisions with your money.

Sometimes you just need to start.

I joined Melissa Joy on the Women’s Money Wisdom podcast to talk about retirement, some of the things we tend to worry about, and some of the things we probably need to be talking about more.

We covered retirement rules, spending, aging, family conversations and what retirement can actually look like.

Sometimes spending money on a problem can feel like solving the problem.

I caught myself doing this recently.

I've been dealing with some tennis elbow pain. I've had this before, so I already know some of the exercises that can help. I even have the old PT printouts somewhere.

But those exercises require me to actually find the printouts and then spend 20 minutes doing them regularly.

You know what feels easier?

Buying a book about maintaining strength as we age. Or a supplement. Or some KT tape.

Suddenly I've done something about the problem!

Except, more often than I'd like to admit, whatever I bought ends up sitting around collecting dust while the free exercises I already knew about remain undone.

It's a good reminder that sometimes spending money gives us the feeling of taking productive action.

I'm not judging the habit. I'm just trying to notice it.

Because maybe the next time I reach for my credit card, I'll stop and ask myself whether I'm actually solving the problem or buying the feeling that I'm solving it.

A lot of retirement planning starts with a simple assumption: figure out how much you spend now, adjust it for inflation, and assume you’ll spend roughly that amount every year.

But real life doesn’t work in a straight line.

Some years will cost more than others. You may travel more in the early years of retirement and slow down later, unexpected expenses will happen, and when circumstances change, we adjust.

In Episode 141 of Take Back Retirement, we look at why the traditional straight-line approach to retirement spending may not reflect the way people actually live, and what it could mean for the way you think about your own retirement plan.

Medicare is one of those things that’s easy to put off learning about until you actually need it.

But some of the decisions you make before 65 can affect what you pay and what options are available to you later.

In Episode 142 of Take Back Retirement, Medicare expert Danielle Roberts, founding partner of Boomer Benefits, joins us to talk through what’s helpful to know before you need to make those decisions.

You don’t have to know everything about Medicare. But knowing what to pay attention to ahead of time can make the process a lot easier.

We spend a lot of time thinking about how to get to retirement.

But what happens after you get there?

You can plan for a lot of things, but you can’t know exactly what the next 20 or 30 years will bring.

There will be things you didn’t expect. And hopefully, some of them will be good things: a new opportunity, a change you want to make, something you didn't even know you wanted yet.

That’s why I think about retirement planning as preparing for flexibility, not predicting exactly what will happen.

Melissa Joy and I talked about this and a lot more on the Women’s Money Wisdom podcast.

You are not a spreadsheet.

Your financial life isn't just a collection of numbers.

It's connected to your hopes, your habits, your family history, the people you care about, and what you want the next chapter of your life to look like.

That's why financial planning can't only be about getting the math right.

The numbers matter, of course. But so does understanding what's behind them.

What are you worried about?

What are you working toward?

What feels important to you now that maybe didn't feel as important ten years ago?

A good financial plan needs to make sense on paper.

But more importantly, it needs to make sense for your life.

I don't think a successful retirement is about doing nothing.

I think it's about having the freedom to fill your days with things that matter to you.

For some people, that's travel.

For others, it's volunteering, family, learning something new, creating, mentoring, or even continuing to work.

The goal isn't to be busy.

The goal is to build a life that feels meaningful to you.

When people tell me they're overwhelmed by their finances, I encourage them to keep it simple.

Before you worry about budgets, investments, or retirement planning, take a look at the basics.

How much money is coming in? How much is going out?

You don't need to have all the answers today. Just start by understanding where you are. Once you know that, the next step becomes much clearer.

I believe retirement planning is about more than money.

Yes, your investments and retirement income matter. But so does having a sense of purpose, spending your time in ways that feel meaningful, and figuring out what this next chapter looks like for you.

Those conversations don't show up on a retirement calculator, but they have just as much impact on whether retirement feels fulfilling.

A good retirement plan prepares you financially.

A great retirement plan prepares you for the life you want to build.

If you're thinking about your own retirement and would like to talk through both the financial and personal side of planning, we'd love to help. Book a call link in page info.

One thing I think people sometimes forget is that retirement doesn't have to be one big, permanent decision.

You may think you'll enjoy one lifestyle and discover another suits you better.

That's okay.

One of the benefits of retirement is having the freedom to adjust as your interests and priorities change.

You don't have to have every answer before you begin.
