A bank form asked me a very simple question today:

“Describe what your business does.”

I stared at it longer than I probably should have. 😂

The easy answer was:

Bookkeeping.
Accounting.
CFO Advisory.

Technically, that’s correct.

But it doesn’t really explain what I do.

I help business owners understand what their numbers are trying to tell them.

Because I’ve learned something from working with different businesses.

Most owners aren’t ignoring their finances.

They’re busy.

Busy serving customers.
Busy managing employees.
Busy solving problems.
Busy trying to grow.

And somewhere along the way, the numbers become something they look at only when the bank balance gets uncomfortable or tax season arrives.

That’s where good accounting should become more than bookkeeping.

It should help answer questions like:

Why is revenue growing but cash still feels tight?

Which part of the business is actually making money?

Where are we overspending?

Can we afford to hire?

What needs to change before the problem gets bigger?

So after thinking about that little bank form today, I realized:

I don’t just organize numbers.

I help business owners make better decisions with them.

Sometimes the simplest questions make you think the most.

Today, I stopped by Dollar Tree and saw this coffee cup.

The words immediately caught my attention:

“Grow through what you go through.”

I bought it because the message felt so real.

As a business owner myself, I know that growth does not always feel exciting while you are going through it.

Sometimes growth looks like a difficult month.

Sometimes it is losing a client.

Sometimes sales are increasing, but cash is still tight.

Sometimes you are working harder than ever and still wondering,
“Where is all the money going?”

I see this with business owners all the time.

And that is why I believe accounting should be more than simply recording transactions and preparing reports.

Good bookkeeping tells you what happened.

CFO Advisory helps you understand why it happened and what you should do next.

We look deeper.

Where is the cash leaking?

Which customers, services, or projects are actually profitable?

Are expenses slowly getting out of control?

Is the business ready to hire?

Can the owner afford to grow?

Are the numbers even reliable enough to make those decisions?

Sometimes a business owner does not need another spreadsheet.

They need someone who will sit beside them, ask the right questions, understand what they are going through, and help them find a better path forward.

That is the part of this work I enjoy the most.

Helping business owners turn financial confusion into clarity.

Helping them learn from difficult seasons.

Helping them make stronger decisions.

And helping them grow through what they go through.

Funny how a simple coffee cup from Dollar Tree can remind you of something so important.

Every challenge in business carries a lesson. The question is whether we are willing to look closely enough to find it.

A $325 charge could have easily been categorized as “Software Expense” and forgotten.

But something about it bothered me.

Recently, while reconciling the bank accounts for one of our real estate clients, we noticed two recurring charges from Wix dot com.

One was around $18.

The other was $325.

Every month.

From a bookkeeping perspective, this would have been easy.

Categorize both transactions under Software or Dues & Subscriptions.

Reconcile the account.

Move on.

But I kept looking at that $325 charge.

Why would a real estate agent be paying Wix $325 every month when there was already another Wix subscription for $18?

So I asked her.

“Do you know what this $325 Wix charge is for?”

She looked surprised.

“No. I only pay them about $18.”

That’s when we went deeper.

The $325 charge had been coming out of her account for the last six months.

That’s $1,950.

And she didn’t even realize it.

This is exactly why I believe accounting should be about more than simply putting transactions into the right category.

Categorizing the transaction tells you "where the money went".

Advisory asks:

Why did the money go there in the first place?

Is this expense necessary?

Is the client being charged correctly?

Is there a duplicate subscription?

Has the cost quietly increased?

Can we find a better alternative?

Business owners are busy running their businesses.

And sometimes recurring charges quietly become part of the background.

Our job as CFO advisors is to notice when something doesn’t look normal and ask the next question.

Because sometimes the biggest value isn't in preparing another report.

It's noticing one transaction that nobody else questioned.

That’s the difference between recording the numbers and actually paying attention to what the numbers are trying to tell you.

When was the last time you looked closely at every recurring charge coming out of your business bank account?

Your construction business may be profitable, but poor tax planning can quietly drain your cash.

I just finished my live session on how construction business owners can maximize tax savings with strategic planning.

Many contractors work hard all year, complete projects, manage crews, handle materials, and keep the business moving. But when tax season comes, they often realize they may have missed opportunities to save money.

In this session, I shared why tax planning should not wait until tax season. It should happen throughout the year with clean books, proper deductions, tax credits, asset planning, and better financial decisions.

We talked about:

✅ Maximizing business deductions
✅ Understanding tax credits
✅ Using depreciation and asset planning wisely
✅ Keeping books clean for better tax decisions
✅ Protecting cash flow before tax season arrives

If you own a construction business and want better financial clarity, stronger cash flow, and smarter tax planning, this session is for you.

Watch the replay and let me know if you have any questions.
