Heading into the fourth quarter, investors face a market sending mixed signals. The U.S. economy remains resilient, with steady consumer spending, heavy business investment in AI, and equity markets that have performed well overall. At the same time, the Fed recently raised interest rates, bonds have sold off sharply since the summer, and inflation remains elevated. In this update, Chief Investment Officer Jeff Dicks examines the data behind these competing narratives, shares what he is watching most closely, and explains how that outlook shapes the way we design and manage portfolios.

The J-curve isn't disappearing but managing it now takes more than patience. It takes access across the full life cycle of private assets and the judgment to know when each one fits.

For decades, private-market investors accepted a tradeoff: they gave up liquidity in exchange for the potential for attractive long-term returns. A typical private equity commitment could take years to produce meaningful distributions, as capital was called gradually and investors waited for exits, often through an acquisition or IPO, to realize their gains. The result was the familiar “J-curve,” with negative cash flows in the early years followed by distributions later in the investment’s life.

For decades, investing in private markets required investors to accept a fundamental tradeoff: in exchange for the potential for attractive long-term returns, investors surrendered liquidity and patience was rewarded.

The AI investment boom faced fresh scrutiny after Anthropic's CEO called for his company and others to slow AI model development pace to ensure safe deployment — a call quickly echoed by the heads of OpenAI and xAI. Since these labs are among the heaviest consumers of compute, the remarks stoked concerns about the outlook for AI capital spending.

The artificial intelligence investment boom came under renewed threat Saturday when Anthropic’s chief executive argued that his company and others should “slow the pace” of AI model development to ensure safe deployment, a call quickly endorsed by the leaders of two other frontier labs, OpenAI...

For many individuals, charitable giving is an important part of financial and estate planning. A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) can be a particularly tax-efficient way to support the organizations you care about. Understanding how and when to use a QCD can be an important part of a broader wealth planning strategy.

For many individuals, charitable giving is an important part of financial and estate planning. If you are age 70½ or older and have assets in a Traditional IRA, a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) can be a particularly tax-efficient way to support the organizations you care about. For high-ne...

The Fed raised interest rates this week for the first time since 2023 — and markets shrugged it off, rallying right back to where they started. The more interesting question is what's next: policymakers are signaling more hikes could be on the way. We're breaking down what it means for stocks and bonds from here.

The Federal Reserve raised interest rates on Wednesday for the first time in three years, moving decisively against President Trump's public demands for cheaper borrowing costs. The decision marks the first major policy move of new Fed Chief Kevin Warsh's tenure, who took office in late May, and set...

Apple just unveiled its first foldable iPhone. But is Apple's keynote still the clearest signal of where technology is headed next? From AI to robotics to wearable tech, more companies than ever are racing to shape what's next. This piece breaks down what still matters.

Apple has arguably produced the most consequential consumer technology since the turn of the millennium. It's hard to understate how quickly the world changed after the iPhone launched in 2007. Ever since, the world has looked at Apple events as a signal for how hardware and software are evolving an...

For decades, Big Tech's playbook was simple: spend little, generate massive cash flow, let share prices follow. That playbook is being rewritten. As the hyperscalers pour capital into AI infrastructure, free cash flow is shrinking — and where that trajectory goes next will shape returns for years to come. This piece lys out four possible paths, from a golden era of AI-driven profits to a leveraged unwind if the bet doesn't pay off.

The big US tech companies, including Amazon, Meta and Alphabet, have long commanded investors’ attention. For years, their business model of rapid innovation, low capital expenditure and strong cash flows allowed their share prices to perform well almost regardless of the investment climate—gene...

Retirement is one of the most significant financial transitions you'll experience, and a successful one depends on coordinating decisions — income, taxes, healthcare, and estate planning — that are easy to address separately but work best planned together. This piece covers a checklist for building a well-coordinated retirement plan, since small choices in one area can ripple into another. Starting early gives you more flexibility down the road.

Retirement is one of the most significant financial transitions you will experience. A successful retirement requires coordination across income planning, taxes, healthcare, estate planning, and your vision for the years ahead.

Wealth built in technology and wealth built in real estate produce oddly mirrored psychologies. Tech wealth can feel abstract: concentrated in one company's fate, often tied up in vesting schedules for years. Real estate wealth feels tangible, but can lack that same growth story. This piece explores why each group wants what the other has, and why diversifying increasingly requires access to private markets, since so much company growth now happens before a business ever goes public.

While there can be exceptions, most of the wealth accumulation we observe from Evergreen clients has been derived from technology or real estate. Those whose wealth has come from technology feel as though their financial success is largely "digital wealth." They can see it on a screen, yet it seems....

Ten-figure financings may be a rational response to the capital needs of AI, energy, space, and advanced manufacturing companies. However, capital raised is not the same as value created, and history shows how quickly enthusiasm can outpace fundamentals.
