Most people think luxury SUVs write off is a tax myth
Thatâs not entirely true.
If a vehicle weighs over 6,000 Ibs, a business may be able to deduct a large part of the cost in the first year.
Thatâs why vehicles like G-Wagons, Escalades, Suburbans and other large SUVs often come up in tax planning.
Simple example:
Letâs say your business makes $200,000 in profit.
You buy a G-Wagon for $150,000 and use it more than 50% for business.
Your taxable income could look like this:
Business income: $200,000
Vehicle deduction: - $150,000
New taxable income: $50,000
This is possible because:
⢠Section 179 allows businesses to expense part of the vehicle cost
⢠Bonus depreciation can apply to the remaining amount
Important rules still apply:
â˘Vehicle must be used more than 50% for business
â˘It must be placed in service during the tax year
â˘Mileage logs and documentation are required
This doesnât mean you can buy any car and write it off.
But for legitimate business use, the tax treatment of heavy vehicles can be significant.
