Beware of FAKE IRS LETTERS!

Fraudsters are mailing fake IRS letters to cryptocurrency holders. The fake letters direct you to a fraudulent website that mimics IRS.gov. You are directed to a nonexistent "Digital Asset Compliance Portal". DO NOT RESPOND!!

The IRS DOES NOT have a Digital Asset Compliance Portal. This is a SCAM!

Don't scan QR codes from unsolicited letters, emails or text messages.

Hang up if someone claims to be from a government agency and asks for payment or personal information.

Report suspicious IRS-related communications to IRS.gov/submitatip.

Phishing Emails and Other Scams!

The IRS is WARNING TAXPAYERS about schemes that are designed to steal taxpayer sensitive data.

- Phishing Emails: trick you into clicking on a suspicious link, providing information or downloading a malware filed.

- Spear Phishing: targets a specific person and delivers a more realistic email known as a lure.

- Clone Phishing: a legitimate email is copied and resent while pretending to be the original sender. The cloned message replaces a safe link or attachment with one that contains malware or directs the recipient to a fake site to verify accounts or enter personal information.

- Whaling: targets leaders or executives with access to large amounts of information at an organization. Payroll offices, human resource departments & financial offices are additional targets.

After the wedding & cutting the cake, here are some steps you should take to make filing next year's tax returns easier:

- A Name Change should be report to the Social Security Administration. The name on the tax return must match Social Security records.

- Change of Addresses can be officially reported with the IRS by filing Form 8822, Change of Address.

- Use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator to determine if you need to change your Federal Withholding. Then submit a new Form W-4 with your employer.

- Review your Filing Status. When you are married, you have the option to file Jointly or Separately. Most times, Jointly is the most tax advantageous.

- Keep Tax Records Together. Find one spot where you will keep all of your tax records including W-2's, 1098's and investment forms. This will make tax filing easier.

The IRS isn't Horsing Around with Hobby Losses Anymore!

For years, the IRS and Taxpayers have been arguing whether losses that involve an activity that mixes business & pleasure can be deducted as a Business Loss on your tax return.

The Tax Court and IRS look at:
- Is the activity carried out in a businesslike manner?
- Is the taxpayer an expert?
- Dies the taxpayer devote the necessary time and effort?
- Does the activity create an appreciable asset?
- Are there successes in similar activities?
- Is the history of the activity income or loss?
- Have there been occasional profits?
- Is there a stable financial status?
- Is the activity undertaken for personal pleasure or recreation?

If you show a profit in any of the 3 out of the last 5 consecutive years, the IRS will presume that the activity ISN'T A HOBBY.

Attention All Newlyweds ----This is what you need to do, when you say, "I do"! 🥰

For taxes, your marital status as of December 31 determines your tax filing --- Married Filing Joint or Married Filing Separate.

You also need to report any name change to the Social Security Administration. Complete Form SS-5 at SSA.gov.

If your address changed, complete Form 8822 at IRS.gov.

Also you must complete a new Form W-4, for your employer. You should use the Tax Withholding Estimator on IRS.gov to check your withholding and help you complete Form W-4.

🥰Congratulations to Paige Akins & Michael Heid on their beautiful wedding!

Do you know someone who has a change in marital status?
The IRS considers a couple married, for filing tax purposes, if they are married as of December 31st. A couple is not divorced until there is a final decree of divorce or separate maintenance.

When a taxpayer divorces or separates, a new Form W-4 should be completed and given to your employer to change your Federal Withholding.

Generally the parent with custody of a child can claim them on their tax return. If parents can't decide who claims the child, they should refer to the tie-breaker rules in Publication 504 www.irs.gov.

Child Support payments are NEVER deductible and are NEVER taxable.

Also, if a taxpayer transfers property to their former spouse due to a divorce, there's no recognized gain or loss on the transfer.

The New SALT Deduction!
SALT is the federal deduction for state and local taxes.

The SALT deduction was unlimited going back to 1913. In 2017, Congress installed a $10,000 cap on the SALT deduction.

The new 2025 tax law increases the SALT cap to $40,000 for 5 years. That is QUADRUPLED!!! But in 2030 it goes back to $10,000.

And there is a PHASE-OUT if you make more than $500,000.

Stay tuned for more posts about the New 2025 Tax Law!
