🎒 Illinois Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday Returns August 7–16, 2026! ✏️

For 10 days, Illinois shoppers can save on qualifying back-to-school purchases. During the holiday, the state portion of sales tax will be reduced from 6.25% to 1.25%. Local sales taxes will still apply, so purchases will not be completely tax-free.

Qualifying purchases include:

👕 Clothing and footwear priced at less than $125 per item, including shirts, pants, dresses, coats, socks, shoes, boots, and school uniforms.

📚 School supplies used by students, including backpacks, calculators, notebooks, paper, pencils, pens, folders, crayons, markers, scissors, rulers, and lunch boxes. School supplies are not subject to the $125 limit.

Items that generally do not qualify include computers, electronics, cell phones, textbooks, art supplies, jewelry, handbags, sports equipment, and cleated athletic shoes.

Mark your calendars for August 7 through August 16 and stretch those back-to-school dollars a little further!
