💚 A little personal and business update!

If you’ve known me for a while, you may know me as Joni Poland. After my divorce, I changed my last name back to Joni Curry.

So if you search for me or see older certificates, credentials, or business information under Joni Poland — that’s still me! 😊

Same tax professional. Same business. Just a different last name. 💚

And it’s also a good reminder that life changes—marriage, divorce, a new baby, a new job, or moving—can affect your tax situation.

⏰ Filed an extension? Don’t forget about your October 15 deadline!

If you requested an extension to file your federal tax return, now is a good time to start gathering your documents and getting everything ready.

Remember: an extension gives you more time to FILE, not more time to PAY any tax that was due.

Don’t wait until the last minute. 📄💻

💰 Don’t wait until tax season to check your withholding!

Just because federal income tax is coming out of your paycheck doesn’t necessarily mean enough is being withheld.

Take a look at your most recent paystub and check your year-to-date wages and federal income tax withheld. A withholding check during the year gives you time to make adjustments before tax season.

Let's talk about a major paycheck mistake most people make: The Form W-4. 📝

When you start a new job, your employer hands you a W-4 to determine how much federal tax is taken out of your check. Most people fill it out once, guess on the steps, and never look at it again.

But did you know that if your total income for the year falls below a certain amount, you might not owe any federal income tax at all?

If you meet the requirements, you can actually claim "EXEMPT" on your W-4. This means your employer stops withholding federal income tax, keeping more money in your pocket every single payday.

Who qualifies for this in 2026?
Generally, if you had a $0 tax liability last year AND you expect your total income this year to be less than the standard deduction for your filing status:

🔹 Single filers: Making under $16,100
🔹 Head of Household: Making under $24,150
🔹 Married Filing Jointly: Making under $32,200

⚠️ Quick Warning: Even if you are exempt from federal income tax, F**A taxes (Social Security and Medicare) will still be withheld. And if you claim exempt but end up making more than the threshold, you will owe the IRS at tax time.

If you are a student working part-time, a retiree with a small gig, or a seasonal worker, checking your W-4 right now can give your paycheck an instant boost.

Not sure if you’re withholding too much or too little? Let's take a look at your pay stubs and plan ahead so there are no surprises next spring!

Let's be completely honest: Not every small business needs a professional bookkeeper right away. 🛑

When you are first starting out, managing every penny yourself is a badge of honor. But as you grow, there comes a point where DIY bookkeeping actually starts costing you money.

How do you know which camp you fall into? Let's break it down:

❌ You DO NOT need a bookkeeper yet if:
• You just launched and have fewer than 15–20 transactions a month.
• You have a single, straightforward income stream with zero inventory or employees.
• You genuinely enjoy spending your weekends reconciling bank statements and categorizing expenses.

✅ You absolutely NEED a bookkeeper if:
• You are spending 5+ hours every week stressed out over receipts and spreadsheets instead of growing your business.
• You have no idea what your actual monthly profit is, or where your cash flow is going.
• You are mixing business and personal expenses because separating them feels overwhelming.
• You have hired 1099 contractors or W-2 employees and payroll compliance is giving you a headache.
• You treat tax season like an emergency scramble instead of a routine event.

Bookkeeping isn't just about data entry—it's about buying back your time, maximizing your tax deductions, and gaining absolute financial clarity.

If you realized you've outgrown the DIY phase, let's get your ledger audit-proof and running smoothly.

Paying people to help your business? 🤝

Mixing up employees, contractors, and vendors is a major IRS audit risk.

• Employees (W-2): Need a W-4, I-9, and official payroll.
• Contractors (1099): You MUST get a signed W-9 before you pay them!
• Vendors: You need an invoice for every single expense.

Let’s get your team correctly classified and your books audit-proof. Call Joni Tax Service LLC today! 🚀
