Looking for investments with valuable tax advantages? Stock in certain domestic C corporations can offer substantial tax savings when you sell, and the benefits have been enhanced. Investors in qualified small business (QSB) stock acquired after July 4, 2025, may be eligible for a 50% capital gains exclusion after holding the stock for three years and a 75% exclusion after four years. The previous 100% exclusion after five years is still available. The maximum exclusion also increased from $10 million to the greater of $15 million (inflation-adjusted after 2026) or 10 times the aggregate adjusted basis of stock sold during the tax year. The rules are complex, so contact us at 918-336-0008 to learn more.

What do pumpkin patches, ski resorts and ice cream shops have in common? Their revenue ebbs and flows throughout the year, but many costs are year-round. This can create cash shortfalls. If you operate a seasonal business, consider these four tips to manage cash flow better: 1) prepare rolling forecasts, 2) use data to plan inventory, staffing and marketing, 3) monitor receivables, inventory and payables, and 4) set aside peak-season cash and arrange financing before it’s needed. After the busy season, compare actual results with your forecast and apply what you learn to the next cycle. Contact us at 918-336-0008 for help implementing these strategies and assessing your cash-flow needs.

Owning assets jointly with your adult child can invite unwelcome tax consequences that may outweigh potential benefits. For example, owning an asset together as “joint tenants with right of survivorship” can open up transfer tax exposure. If you add your child to the title of property you already own, it may be considered a taxable gift of half the property’s value. And when you die, half of the property’s value will be included in your taxable estate. A properly designed trust can be a more tax-efficient option. Call us at 918-336-0008 for details.

If you work remotely and split your time between two states during the year, it can create state tax issues. A state with an income tax generally can tax all income of its residents and income earned within its borders by nonresidents. Residency rules vary but may consider your domicile, days spent in the state and whether you maintain a home is there. Your domicile is generally your true, fixed, permanent home — the place you intend to return to. Some states may treat you as a resident for income tax purposes if you maintain a home and spend a specified number of days there. Contact us at 918-336-0008 to review your situation and help determine whether you may have tax obligations in more than one state.

If you were born in 1960 or later, you can start taking “full” Social Security benefits when you turn age 67. But should you? It may depend on your health, retirement income and other factors. If possible, try to delay taking benefits until you’re age 70, when you’ll receive larger monthly payments. In fact, benefits increase by 8% each year you delay taking them! For more about Social Security and funding your retirement, call us at 918-336-0008.

An external audit provides reasonable assurance that your financial statements are free from material misstatement, but it doesn’t examine every transaction or guarantee it will detect all errors or fraud. Lenders, investors, surety companies or government agencies may require a business to provide audited financial statements. Even when an audit isn’t required, audited statements may strengthen the credibility of your financial reporting with stakeholders. Whether an audit is required or voluntary, early preparation can make the process more efficient. Call us at 918-336-0008 to discuss your upcoming audit and identify steps you can take now to get your books and records audit-ready.

Business owners: Should you use cash to pay federal tax debt or keep it for operational needs? Paying the IRS sooner may ease stress and reduce penalties, but draining cash can disrupt operations, payroll and growth. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. In many cases, the IRS offers options — such as installment agreements, temporary collection holds or penalty relief — that may help you stay compliant while preserving cash flow. The biggest risk is choosing extremes, either depleting cash reserves or ignoring the issue. A balanced strategy often works best. Call us at 918-336-0008. We can review your options and help you create a plan.

Many individuals invest in real estate to help diversify their portfolio, create an income stream for themselves from rental income and build net worth over time. Income and losses from investment real estate are considered passive by definition — unless you’re a real estate professional. Even then, you generally must “materially participate” in a rental activity for it to be treated as nonpassive. Why is this important? Passive income may be subject to the 3.8% net investment income tax on top of any income tax otherwise due, and passive losses are deductible only against passive income, with the excess carried forward. Call us at 918-336-0008 to discuss tax planning for your investment real estate.
