October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which makes it a great time for a friendly reminder to protect your personal and financial information. Tax scams can happen year-round, and they often become more convincing when they reference refunds, balances due, notices, or account access.
Be cautious with unexpected emails, texts, phone calls, or social media messages asking for personal information or payment. Remember: the IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by phone, email, text message or social media. Use strong passwords, turn on multi-factor authentication when possible, and avoid clicking links from messages you were not expecting. Lastly, always make sure you are using an official, secure IRS website before submitting any financial information.
