I was thinking about college planning and the principles I think are important to getting it right.

Start early
Make expectations clear
Put it on "paper"

A lot of focus is on which account should I use, but I think these are more valuable.

Don’t get sucked into sports betting!

There's always something to be nervous about.

And I think to myself, "That's kind of ridiculous."

But I can't deny it's a struggle sometimes.

So, what do I do to quell that?

Well, first of all, I cling to the love of God and that He will direct my steps.

That's huge.

What else?

• Work my butt off
• Build skills
• Have adequate cash reserve
• Have the right insurance
• Shrug off market volatility
• Spend intentionality
• Avoid debt

Enjoy the ride!

The most common mistake I've heard the last two weeks?

Making Roth IRA contributions when income is too high. Sometimes over multiple years.

Better to avoid this, but it is fixable.

Financial advisors should catch this this. Tax preparers should as long their client tells them.

When I was an employee with benefits, I never missed a good ol' HR webinar.

That way I could learn about benefit changes and whether the costs would take a bigger bite out of our paycheck.

We only had one set of benefits to check because my wife worked at home while we homeschooled our kids through high school.

It took intentionality to keep her in the know, and I could have done better.

If you both work, picking benefits is a bit more complicated.

It means two HR webinars, two benefits portals, two enrollment guides, and two uncoordinated deadlines.

Here's what I'd do as a couple:

• Sign up for your HR webinar. Don't skip it because work is busy. Your employer should give you margin to attend.
• Download both guides and the plan options because that's where you find all the nitty gritty details.
• Mark the earlier deadline on the calendar. That's the deadline for both of you.
• Start talking about it as a couple way earlier than you think. And please, don't wait until the night before the deadline! It's so easy for it to fall down the priority list.

Even though there are separate benefits, it's one decision for your household.

How do you avoid "financial suggestioning"?

I focus on understanding why a client reached out to begin with and what questions they are trying to answer.

I still talk too much in those meetings!

My solution isn't a strategy; it's a process I lead them through.

Most clients are surprised with how money and meaning intersect.

They say, "I didn't expect a financial advisor to ask these types of questions."

Am I crazy for walking two miles from the San Diego airport to my aunt’s house instead of paying $30 for an Uber?

Ended up at a hostile Cubs playoff game with new friends. What a memorable experience!
