Before asking what the business is worth, ask what the transaction needs to make possible.

A headline valuation may sound attractive, but it does not tell an owner what will remain after taxes, debt and transaction costs. It does not define how long the owner may need to stay involved, how much risk remains or whether the proceeds will support lasting financial independence.

Price matters. But the strongest outcomes begin when the owner defines success before the buyer or transaction process defines it for them.

Selling a business changes more than an owner's balance sheet.

It also changes the number of people, opportunities and requests competing for that owner's attention.

A friend has a real estate project.
A former employee is raising capital.
A family member wants help launching a business.
Someone has a private deal that is supposedly too good to miss.

After a liquidity event, the owner does not just need to become a good investor. The owner needs to become a disciplined allocator of capital, attention, reputation and relationships.

Our new whitepaper, After the Exit, provides a practical framework for evaluating the direct investment opportunities that often follow a business sale.

The objective is not to eliminate opportunity. It is to help owners know when to say yes, when to say no and when to slow down long enough to involve the right people.

We hope you find it useful.

The greatest family legacy isn't simply transferring wealth.

It's transferring wisdom.

One of our favorite things we do at Bespoke Capital is bringing multiple generations together after a business exit to talk about family values, stewardship, communication, and purpose.

Because building wealth is only part of the story.

Helping it strengthen a family for generations is the part that matters most.

If you'd like to learn more about how we structure these meetings, our Co-Founder, Max Dean, recently shared 10 Best Practices for Family Legacy Meetings. https://www.raymondjamesconnect.com/a0RWjM

Some of our favorite meetings have nothing to do with investments.

They involve grandparents, parents, and grandchildren sitting around one table talking about the future.

Helping families prepare the next generation is some of the most meaningful work we get to do.

Legacy isn't just what you leave behind.

It's what you intentionally pass forward. https://www.raymondjamesconnect.com/a-rMyg

Independence looks different for business owners.

Sometimes it means selling.

Sometimes it means continuing to build.

But often, it means creating enough clarity and flexibility that the business is no longer the only plan.

The family has options.
The balance sheet has strength.
The next chapter has more room to breathe.

That is the kind of independence we help business owners think through.

Most wealth is lost between generations, not because of bad investments, but because families never had the right conversations.

In our recent episode of Tailored to the Exception covers exactly this. "Shirtsleeves to Shirtsleeves" with Cody Hilbun explores why 90% of family wealth disappears by the third generation, and what you can do about it.

Link in bio. Worth 4 minutes of your time.
