Before you buy that new blazer, you need to know this ↓

If your clothing is suitable for everyday wear, even if you don't intend to wear it outside of work, it's probably not deductible.

Not convinced? In Pevsner v. Commissioner, the IRS ruled that a YSL manager in Dallas who was required to wear YSL when working couldn't deduct her clothing expenses, because she technically could wear them for personal occasions.

PSA: Look at the top right-hand corner (or wherever the notice number is) of your IRS notice before you panic! πŸ‘€

Your notice number is going to help you understand exactly what the notice is (and whether you need to take any action).

Not every notice means you owe money: sometimes the IRS just wants to let you know about an adjustment they made to your return, or they want to request more information from you.

When in doubt, ask your tax accountant for help responding to your IRS notice to make sure any issues don't snowball into bigger tax bills! πŸ’Έ

When you start your own business, the IRS basically says:

You're officially the boss AND the employee; please pay us both halves of Social Security and Medicare. 🫴

Tiny silver lining: the IRS lets you deduct half of it on your tax return (because they’re oh sooo generous πŸ™„).

Should I just elect to be taxed as an S corp to save on SE taxes?

It depends... You (or your accountant) need to run an analysis to determine whether the benefits of an S election outweigh the costs.

If you hadn't even heard of self-employment tax before this post (or you had, but kinda forgot), it's past time to hire a tax accountant!

"Isn't 1099 season in January?" - you, probably
You're not wrong...

BUT, prepping for 1099s is a year-round process for small business owners who don't want to be incredibly stressed come the last week of January! πŸ“†

Here are the two things you can be doing NOW to make filing 1099s easier on you (and your accountant):

β†’ Make a list of every contractor you've paid $600 or more this year.

β†’ Ensure you have an updated W-9 on file for each of your contractors.

PRO TIP: Each time you hire a new contractor, make sure you get a W-9 before you pay them, and create a new vendor (with their EIN) in your bookkeeping software.

Here are the 9 states to have on your "dream home" list if you're worried about state income taxes:

β†’ Alaska
β†’ Florida
β†’ Nevada
β†’ New Hampshire
β†’ South Dakota
β†’ Tennessee
β†’ Texas
β†’ Washington*
β†’ Wyoming

But... just because there's no state income tax doesn't mean these states are low-tax states.

You need to factor other state-level taxes (like property tax + sales tax) into your decision if you're truly trying to minimize your tax burden!

The ULTIMATE jump scare? It's those taxes you extended waaaay back in April that are now due this month! πŸ‘€

Yep, October 15th is the last day you have to file your individual tax return without penalties (if you extended!).

Notice I said file... NOT pay.

Any taxes you owe were actually due back in April, but you can stop more penalties + interest from accruing by paying ASAP.

Here's your cheat sheet to not give the IRS more money than you need to! ↓

β†’ Set aside money for estimated taxes.

Ask your tax accountant (helllo, it could be me!) what % of your income to save. Then put it on an auto transfer β†’ High Yield Savings Account.

β†’ Track your income + expenses.

If you don't already have a bookkeeping system in place, this should be priority number one!

β†’ Don’t miss tax deadlines. This one's kinda self-explanatory. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

β†’ Work with a qualified tax accountant.

No shade, but that DIY tax software isn’t going to hold your hand through S Corp elections, credits, or tax planning. A real human (like me!) who knows your industry will.

So, you're ready to open an LLC, but you're not totally sure where to start?

⬇️ START HERE ⬇️

β†’ Pick the state you want to open your LLC in (and check on their naming requirements).

β†’ Choose a registered agent (yes, you can be your own!).

β†’ File Articles of Organization with your state.

β†’ Decide whether you'd like to apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS; it's free!

β†’ Open a business bank account for your new LLC that you ONLY use for business expenses.

β†’ Apply for any licenses/permits your niche needs.

β†’ Bonus step? Hire a great bookkeeper + tax accountant to help you manage your finances correctly from the jump!

Want to know the WORST thing you can do if you can't pay your tax bill? Nothing.

Ignoring your taxes only makes them a BIGGER problem!

Here's where to start:

β†’ Pay whatever you can afford to pay now (even a partial payment can help cut down penalties + interest).

β†’ See if you qualify for a payment plan or installment agreement.

β†’ Hire a tax accountant to help you respond to any notices and minimize your tax bill in the future.

β†’ Determine whether you need to adjust your withholdings (if you're a W-2 employee) or set aside money (from 1099 or other income) to avoid getting into this same position next year.

I know we're not even to Halloween yet... but I promise you, year-end is going to be here before you know it! πŸ˜…

Here's what you need to do in Q4:

β†’ File any extended 2025 tax returns.

β†’ Request W-9s from all vendors (and make a list of everyone you've paid more than $600 this year).

β†’ Start prepping for Black Friday sales.

β†’ Budget for year-end employee bonuses.

β†’ Run a comparative YTD P&L and review your performance towards your 2026 goals.

β†’ Review your holiday PTO requests (and plan for your own much-needed time off!)
