How do I dispute an error on my credit report? | Consumer Financial Protection Bureau 09/09/2026

Credit rule alert: CFPB complaint process changed

Status: Current CFPB policy, announced June 24, 2026. The consumer dispute page was updated September 2, 2026.

What changed:

The CFPB now tells consumers to complete the dispute process directly with the credit bureau before filing a CFPB complaint. It also added two-factor authentication, requires clearer disclosure when a third party submits a complaint, and is considering address verification and a closure option for complaints filed before the bureau dispute process is completed. CFPB announcement

Why it matters:

Do not present the CFPB complaint portal as the first step for a credit-reporting error. Clients should first dispute specific inaccuracies with Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion and keep proof of the dispute and results. Mass complaints, disputes of accurate information, and complaints submitted without disclosing third-party involvement may receive greater scrutiny.

What to review before communicating:

• Update your process to place bureau disputes before CFPB complaints.

• Use specific dispute reasons and supporting documents.

• Keep submission confirmations, correspondence, and investigation results.

• If you assist with a CFPB complaint, disclose your role and confirm that the client completed the bureau dispute first.

• Do not claim this changed the FCRA itself. This is a CFPB complaint-handling policy change.

The CFPB’s updated instructions still recommend disputing with both the credit bureau and the company that supplied the information. https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/how-do-i-dispute-an-error-on-my-credit-report-en-314/

I used to think freedom had to look BIG to count.

Now?

A peaceful morning.
Not rushing.
Handling business.
Having time for the people I love.
Being able to change my plans.

Those little freedoms add up

You get an extra $2,000 EVERY month for the rest of your life.

But you have to choose where it goes:

A. Investing
B. Traveling
C. Paying off debt
D. Building a business
E. Helping family

You cannot split it.

Where’s it going?

I remember when ā€œmaking money from my laptopā€ sounded like one of those internet phrases everybody threw around.

Then I realized the laptop isn’t the opportunity.

The skill is.

The laptop is just where I happen to use it

What if your credit score isn’t actually the thing keeping you from getting approved? šŸ‘€

That’s where people get caught up.

They’ll tell me:

ā€œBut my score is a 700!ā€

Okay.

What does the rest of the report look like?

High balances?
New accounts?
Recent inquiries?
Late payments?
Thin history?

The number gets your attention.

The profile tells the story.

That’s why I teach people to stop obsessing over one number and start understanding what’s actually behind it
