To the surprise of many, the Indian stock market (as measured by the Nifty 50 Index) is off to one of it's worst starts in recent history, down -10% over the first 6 months of the year. This poor return has the country ranked right at the bottom in terms of global equity performance in 2026. What's the reason for this lackluster performance? Two reasons: India is an energy deficit country where high energy prices due to the Iran War is hurting consumption and it's Artificial Intelligence buildout many feel is lagging other nations, particularly in southeast Asia.
