📬 Still waiting on your tax refund check? Don't panic! 📬
If your tax return resulted in a refund and it’s being sent as a paper check, waiting on the mail can be stressful. But did you know you don't need your tax preparer to track it down? The government tracks everything digitally, and you can check the status or request a replacement entirely on your own!
Here is how to find out where your money is:
1️⃣Check Online First: Head over to the official IRS Where's My Refund Portal
www.irs.gov/refunds or download the IRS2Go app. You’ll need your SSN/ITIN, filing status, and exact refund amount.
2️⃣Know the 28-Day Rule: The IRS requires a 28-day waiting period from the date they mailed the check before it can legally be reported as lost or missing.
3️⃣Federal vs. State: Remember that the IRS has absolutely no visibility into your state refund! If your state check is missing, you must look it up directly through your specific state’s Department of Revenue portal.
4️⃣Trigger a Trace: If it has been more than 28 days, you can use the online IRS tool or file IRS Form 3911 to force a digital trace. If the check was never cashed, they will cancel it and mail you a brand-new one.
Check your refund status 24 hours after you e-file or 4 weeks after you mail a paper return. Check in your account or use the refund tracker, IRS2Go or the refund hotline.
