Need to Pay the IRS? There May Be an Easier Way.

If you’re a small business owner, making federal tax payments can sometimes feel more complicated than it needs to be.

Did you know the IRS offers Direct Pay, a free way for eligible taxpayers to make certain federal tax payments directly from a U.S. bank account?

You can use it for certain estimated tax payments, balances due, and other eligible payments. You can also schedule some payments in advance.

But there are a few important things to know before you hit “submit,” including which payments qualify, payment limits, scheduling, and what happens after you pay.

And one important reminder: paying the IRS does not mean your tax return has been filed.

We broke down how IRS Direct Pay works and what small business owners should know before making their next payment.

IRS NEWS: Business Equipment Purchases

Under current law, 100% bonus depreciation is back for most qualifying business property acquired and placed in service after January 19, 2025. That can include qualifying equipment, machinery and other business property.

That does not mean “go buy something because you can write it off.”

It means a major equipment purchase may have a very different tax impact than it did under the previous phase-down rules.

If your business is considering a significant purchase before year-end, timing matters — and so does understanding how that purchase fits into the rest of your tax picture.

A tax deduction should support a good business decision, not create one.

Before making a large year-end purchase solely for the tax benefit, know the numbers first.

You owe the IRS money. Now what?

If you can't pay your tax bill in full, it can feel overwhelming. But there's a big difference between having a tax debt and making decisions that can create an even bigger problem.

A recent DOJ case is a powerful reminder that ignoring an IRS problem isn't a strategy.

The better question is:

What options do you have before the situation gets worse?

The Tax Decision You Make in September

Some of the most important tax decisions for your business happen before tax season ever begins.

By September, you have months of actual numbers behind you — and still have time left in the year to make adjustments.

That makes this a good time to ask:

• Is your income tracking higher or lower than expected?
• Have there been major changes in the business?
• Are you planning equipment or other significant purchases?
• Is your compensation strategy still appropriate?
• Are there tax opportunities you need to act on before year-end?

Waiting until January can turn planning opportunities into things you wish you had done.

There are still a few months left in 2026. Use them.

“I’ll just pay them as a 1099.” If you’re a Florida business owner, you may want to think twice about that statement.

Right now, I’m handling three Florida Department of Revenue audits involving business clients — and what the auditors are requesting should get the attention of anyone using subcontractors or independent contractors.

Issuing someone a 1099 does not automatically make that person an independent contractor.

During an audit, the question may become: Can you show why this person was properly classified as an independent contractor instead of an employee?

That can mean producing much more than a 1099 or contractor agreement. Auditors may look at how the person actually works for your business and request documentation supporting that they operate an independent business.

And if your books show subcontractor expenses but required 1099s weren’t issued? That can raise another set of questions.

This isn’t theoretical. It’s what I’m seeing in practice right now.

If you use independent contractors, now is the time to make sure your worker classifications, W-9s, 1099 procedures and documentation are in order — before an auditor asks for them.

Trump Accounts are here — but do you know how they actually work?

There’s been a lot of attention around the new $1,000 federal contribution for eligible children, but Trump Accounts involve much more than that initial deposit.

These new tax-advantaged investment accounts come with specific rules surrounding:

• Who is eligible
• Who can contribute
• Annual contribution limits
• When the money can be accessed
• Gift tax considerations
• Taxable vs. after-tax contributions
• Recordkeeping and basis
• What happens when the child turns 18

And yes — some of those details can have tax consequences down the road.

For families, grandparents, and even employers considering contributions, understanding the rules before money goes into the account is important.

Trump Accounts may offer another opportunity to invest for a child's future, but like most things involving taxes, the details matter.

Know the rules. Keep good records. And make sure the decisions you make today fit into the bigger tax picture.

Twenty-five years later, we remember.

We remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001.
We remember the families whose lives were forever changed.
We remember the first responders who ran toward danger and the countless acts of courage, compassion, and unity that followed.

Today, we pause to honor their memory and reflect on a day our nation will never forget.

🇺🇸 We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

Comment MAINTENANCE if you think it's time to take a more proactive approach to your business taxes.
