The house. Your monthly cash flow. The division of your assets.

It's tempting to solve each one separately.

But divorce finances don't work that way.

Keeping more house may mean keeping fewer liquid or retirement assets. The assets you receive can affect the income available to you. Support can change what housing is sustainable. Taxes can change what an apparently equal settlement is actually worth.

One decision moves another.

That's why we created “The 4 Financial Decisions That Matter Most in Divorce”.

It walks through the major financial decisions that should be considered together before you finalize your settlement.

50/50 sounds simple.

Add up the marital assets. Divide by two. Done.

Except the assets on each side of that equation may behave very differently after divorce.

Cash, retirement accounts, home equity, investments, pensions and business interests can have different tax consequences, liquidity, risk, income potential and future value.

So an equal division on a spreadsheet doesn't automatically tell you whether the financial result works for you.

The percentage matters.

But so does what is actually inside your percentage.

A settlement can look perfectly reasonable on paper and still leave you wondering how you're
going to pay the bills every month.

That's because net worth and cash flow answer two different questions.

Net worth tells you what you own.

Cash flow tells you whether the income and resources available to you can support the life you'll actually be living after divorce.

Housing. Insurance. Taxes. Food. Transportation. Healthcare. Travel. Savings. The ordinary and not-so-ordinary expenses of living.

Before you agree to the division of assets and support, you need to understand how those pieces work together.

Because the goal isn't simply to leave divorce with assets.

It's to be able to live afterward.

Keeping the house can feel like one of the most important decisions in divorce.

And sometimes keeping it makes perfect sense.

But “Can I afford the mortgage?” isn't enough information to make that decision.

If keeping the house requires a substantial buyout, takes most of your available cash, reduces your retirement assets, or leaves little room for the unexpected, the house may affect far more than your monthly housing expense.

The better question is:

What will my entire financial life look like if I keep it?

That's the math worth doing before you decide.

Here’s one of the strange things about divorce math:

Two assets with exactly the same value on a balance sheet may not have the same financial value to you.

Consider $100,000 in cash and $100,000 in a retirement account.

We’re not saying one is automatically worth more than the other.

We are saying that the number alone doesn’t tell the whole story.

Taxes may be different. Access to the money may be different. The investment characteristics may be different. And, perhaps most importantly, what you need that asset to do for you after divorce may be very different.

That’s why dividing assets isn’t simply an exercise in making two columns equal.

When you’re evaluating a settlement, don’t just ask:

“Are the numbers equal?”

Ask:

“What will these assets actually do for me?”

Divorce Math Is Weird.

Eventually, the divorce ends.

But the financial consequences of the decisions made during it can stay with you for years.

The house you kept.

The retirement account you traded away.

The debt you agreed to take.

The support arrangement you accepted.

The cash you needed — or didn’t keep.

A settlement isn’t just about getting to an agreement.

It’s about understanding what that agreement will mean for your financial life after the divorce is over.

Because signing the agreement may end the negotiation.

But you’ll be living with the financial consequences long after the divorce is over.

Eventually, the paperwork gets signed.

The attorneys move on.

The meetings stop.

And divorce becomes something that happened.

But the financial decisions?

You take those with you.

The house you kept.

The retirement you divided.

The support you agreed to.

The assets you traded.

The cash flow you created.

That’s why the goal isn’t simply to get divorced.

It’s to come out the other side with a financial life that works.

If you’re facing those decisions now, spend an hour with us before you make them.

Will it?

Because we’d like to see the math.

“It’ll all even out” has a way of appearing when people are trading:

A house for retirement.

Support for assets.

Cash today for money later.

Certainty for risk.

Some tradeoffs absolutely make sense.

But “it feels about right” isn’t financial analysis.

Before you agree to a tradeoff, understand:

What you’re giving up.

What you’re getting.

What each is actually worth.

And what the decision does to your future.

If it really does all even out?

Excellent.

Now prove it.

A settlement can look fair.

Sound fair.

Even feel fair.

And still create a lousy financial outcome.

Before you agree to a tradeoff, ask:

• What will I actually have access to?
• What will I owe in taxes?
• What am I giving up in exchange?
• What does this do to my cash flow?
• Does this still work five years from now?

Because “that seems fair” is not the same thing as:

“This works financially.”

Being able to make the mortgage payment isn’t the same as being able to afford the house.

And being able to afford the house isn’t necessarily the same as making a good financial decision.

Keeping the house can affect your cash reserves, retirement savings, investment portfolio, monthly flexibility—and the other assets available in your settlement.

Sometimes keeping it makes perfect sense.

Sometimes it doesn’t.

The point isn’t keep it or sell it.

The point is:

Know before you decide.

🎥 We cover the marital home and three other major financial decisions in our free webinar.
