KEEP’s co-chairs took our message on the road last week, speaking to a group of employees at shipping company Matson and before a much larger group at the Resource Development Council of Alaska.
Jim Jansen, Chair of Lynden Companies and a founder of KEEP, opened with a step back into history. “We lost more than a decade of investment under ACES, (Alaska’s prior oil tax), at a time of high oil prices.” Jansen said oil provinces around the nation and the world significantly increased their production during this period while Alaska’s declined by double digits.
“Fourteen years of tax stability has resulted in increased investment and increased production. Let’s don’t screw it up with new oil taxes.”
Aaron Schutt, Doyon’s long-time leader who was recently named as CEO of Alaska Silver, reminded the audience that recent investment and production growth did not happen overnight. It took years of planning and investment.
“Any future changes to Alaska’s oil tax system should be evaluated through a deliberative, data-driven process with input from industry, policymakers and independent experts,” he said.
Alaskans can help by talking about the issue, staying informed, communicating via social media and sharing the facts.
