Calling all parents of college-bound students: the 2027-28 FAFSA is open as of today, October 1!
If you have a high schooler (or a college student) who will need financial aid next year, this is the form that unlocks grants, scholarships, work-study, and federal loans. It's free, and it takes about an hour. That hour could save your family a lot over time.
You might think that you make too much money and it's pointless. But it's not. There is no income cutoff to file. Plenty of families are surprised by what they qualify for.
Here's how to get started:
1. Create a StudentAid.gov account. Your student and each contributing parent need their own.
2. Gather recent tax returns, cash account balances, child support records, and Social Security numbers.
3. Build your school list. Add every college your student is considering so they can see your information. Order doesn't matter, and you can add more later.
4. File early. Some state and school aid is limited, and many colleges set priority dates as early as January. The federal deadline is June 30, 2027, but waiting that long can cost you.
5. Check your state's deadline too.
And a heads-up: this isn't a one-time form. You'll file again every year your student is in school, so set a reminder for next October.
If you have questions about getting started, send me a message, and I'll point you in the right direction.
