“You’re supposed to be a 30-year investor, not a 30-day trader.”

Nate makes a good point.

If you're investing for retirement, financial independence, or the next chapter of your life, September's market performance is worth understanding. But how much should one month influence decisions you're making for the next 10, 20, or 30 years?

That's where your financial plan comes in.

Knowing how much cash you'll need in the near term, how much investment risk you're taking, and what your portfolio needs to accomplish over time gives you a framework for evaluating market moves.

Sometimes the right decision is to make a change. Sometimes it's to stay the course. The important thing is understanding why.

On this week's OFF THE WALL, Dave Armstrong, CFA®, and Nate Tonsager, CFA®, CIPM, discuss September's historical market performance, what typically happens in the fourth quarter, and how they think about short-term volatility in the context of long-term investing.

Understanding the math behind your portfolio is easy; controlling your reaction when market headlines hit your stomach is where ex*****on actually happens.

Most conventional risk assessments rely heavily on how much volatility you can financially absorb or how much risk you believe is necessary for future growth. But capacity and tolerance only tell half the story when a sudden market drop threatens a timeline for a major goal.

The variable that dictates your outcomes during choppy markets is Risk Composure.

When short-term uncertainty causes your stomach to churn, low composure can easily override years of logical planning and long-term conviction. A strategy built without accounting for your emotional reaction forces you to rely on sheer willpower at the exact moment it's hardest to summon.

Listen to this week’s episode of Between Sips to see how Emily and Jessica break down the crucial difference between what your portfolio can afford and how your brain actually handles the ride.

September has historically been the weakest month of the year for the S&P 500.

Does that mean you should do something different with your portfolio every September?

Not necessarily.

Historical market patterns are interesting, but they aren't a reliable way to predict what stocks will do next month.

What you CAN plan for is how much cash you'll need.

If you have a major expense coming up, whether it's college tuition, a home renovation, or simply covering your living expenses in retirement, having that money set aside can help you avoid selling investments at an inopportune time.

That's a much more useful way to prepare for market volatility than trying to guess when the next pullback will happen.

On this week's OFF THE WALL, Dave Armstrong, CFA®, and Nate Tonsager, CFA®, CIPM, discuss September's historical market performance, what the data tells us about the fourth quarter, and why your cash strategy matters when markets get unpredictable.

When markets get ugly, you still have three choices:

Buy. Hold. Sell.

That's it.

The harder part is knowing which one makes sense for you when headlines are coming fast and your portfolio is taking a hit.

This is one reason we talk so much about having a cash strategy. If you have enough cash set aside for your near-term needs, you may be able to ride out a market pullback without selling investments to pay for your life.

And if you have cash available beyond what you need for spending, a pullback may present opportunities to buy.

On this week's OFF THE WALL, Dave Armstrong, CFA®, and Nate Tonsager, CFA®, CIPM, discuss how to think through those three choices when markets get volatile—and why it's worth making a plan before you're in the middle of a selloff.

Tariffs. Interest rates. Energy prices. AI debt.

There's plenty for investors to keep an eye on right now. But how much of it should actually change what you're doing with your portfolio?

That's what Dave Armstrong, CFA®, and Nate Tonsager, CFA®, CIPM, are tackling on this week's OFF THE WALL.

They're answering three Ask Monument Anything questions about the geopolitical risks making headlines, why September has historically been a tough month for stocks, and what the data tells us about the fourth quarter.

They also get into an important distinction: understanding market risks doesn't mean you need to trade around every headline.

If you've been wondering what deserves your attention and what may already be reflected in market prices, this episode is for you.

Some of the most important and impactful work we do is helping clients define WHAT they want to transfer, in addition to their wealth:

➡️Vision.
➡️Values.
➡️Stories.
➡️Connection.

Monument's Emily Harper, CFP® and Jessica Gibbs, CFP® joined the VISIONARY ADVISOR podcast for a discussion around legacy planning from the perspective of the rising generation, including an important question that families often struggle to answer:

How do you talk about wealth, inheritance, and intentions BEFORE a major life event forces the conversation?

Want to give retirement a ‘dry run’?

It could be a smart move.

That’s because the biggest risk in a traditional retirement isn't always financial.

For many, it’s the sudden loss of structure, routine, and daily purpose.

Stepping into semi-retirement lets you ‘test drive’ your time management and lifestyle goals before fully walking away. It gives you the space to explore new interests and adjust your routine with a safety net, making sure your next chapter is as fulfilling in practice as it looks on paper.

From a wealth strategy standpoint, scaling back your working hours creates a valuable runway. The ongoing earned income offsets early portfolio drawdowns, protects your core growth assets from sequence of return risk, and keeps your long-term plan compounding uninterrupted.

Tune into the full episode of Between Sips with Emily and Jessica to see how cash flow modeling can help you dry run your ideal retirement timeline. 🎧

Trying to outsmart geopolitical headlines by shifting your investments around is a losing game for your long-term money.
The problem with market timing isn't just knowing when to get out. It's knowing exactly when to get back in — and most people get that part wrong.

Staying disciplined doesn't mean timing the market or sitting in cash. It means staying fully invested in your target mix, while shifting your stock holdings toward the sectors showing the most strength.

This helps keep your long-term plan intact, takes emotion out of the equation during volatile periods, and positions you to participate in the market recovery.

In the latest episode of Off The Wall, David B. Armstrong, CFA and Nate Tonsager, CFA, CIPM break down how a data-driven approach keeps your portfolio fully invested through geopolitical uncertainty.

Staying fully invested sounds simple, until the market gets volatile. Some investors tend to panic and pull out money. But jumping in and out of the market can turn a temporary dip into permanent damage to your portfolio.

Consider this: The S&P 500 finishes the year positive about 75% of the time. This means that the odds actually favor patient investors.

Real risk management requires knowing the difference between your own cash needs and short-term market and headline noise, so your money stays invested long enough to actually grow.

In this episode of Off The Wall, David B. Armstrong, CFA and Nate Tonsager, CFA, CIPM break down how investors can stay disciplined during volatile periods using data instead of emotion.

It's completely understandable to want to move to safer investments when markets get rocky. But that instinct often backfires.

Selling out of stocks during a downturn locks in losses that would have otherwise been temporary — and it takes you out of the market right before it recovers.

Your investment mix shouldn't change because of what happened this week. It should change because your own timeline or cash flow needs have changed. If those haven't shifted, reacting to headlines just costs you money over time.

In the latest episode of Off The Wall, David B. Armstrong, CFA and Nate Tonsager, CFA, CIPM break down why reacting to market ups and downs hurts your returns — and how to build a strategy that can handle volatility without the panic.
