๐จ Attention Louisiana Business Owners
If your business accepts debit and credit card payments, this is an important update.
Effective August 1, 2026, Louisiana law prohibits businesses from charging a transaction fee, convenience fee, surcharge, or similar fee on debit card transactions. While fees may still be permitted on certain credit card transactions if all legal requirements are met, they may not be applied to payments made with a debit card.
If your business currently passes merchant processing fees on to your customers, we encourage you to contact your merchant processing or credit card clearing company as soon as possible. They can review your current setup and help ensure your payment system complies with the new law before it takes effect.
Many payment systems automatically determine whether a card is processed as debit or credit, so it's important to verify that your equipment and software are configured correctly.
We're sharing this information as a courtesy to help keep Louisiana businesses informed. If you have questions about the tax or bookkeeping implications, we're happy to help. For questions about your payment processing system or equipment, your merchant processing company will be your best resource.
