Is Your Health Insurance Really Covered?
A recent client case is a reminder for Expats in Thailand.
The client had a pre-existing medical condition, but it was not disclosed when applying for insurance. The insurer was therefore unaware of it.
Later, when the client needed treatment, the insurer reviewed the medical history and found that the condition existed before the policy started. The related claim was therefore not covered.
The lesson is simple: always disclose your medical history and check directly with the insurer how pre-existing conditions are treated.
There is also another important point for Expats.
If you are considering insurance from an international insurer, check whether the insurer is licensed to operate in Thailand and whether the person selling the policy is properly authorized.
The OIC has recently taken action regarding the solicitation of insurance from overseas insurers that are not licensed in Thailand and has warned consumers about the risks, including the inability to seek protection through the OIC under Thai law.
This is not about saying an international insurer is good or bad.
It is simply about protecting yourself.
Check. Ask. Verify — before you need to make a claim.
