ABOUT JOPEZ ACADEMY

Jopez Academy is a financial education organisation that helps children, their parents and educators to build mindsets, habits and attitudes towards money and life mastery. Jopez Academy was formed with the aim of supplementing the current (pre-school/primary/secondary school) curriculum with age-appropriate and practical hands-on money mastery processes. The processes include teaching materials and games that would help to nurture children in developing the right money habitudes and thus build a strong financial literacy foundation. Equipping children with such tools early in life would create abundant opportunities for their life-long success. At Jopez Academy, research into cognitive science, child development, early childhood education and psychology are used to develop financial educational training materials, curriculum, coaching and training for children aged 4 to 12 years old, their parents and educators. Methodology
Jopez Academy's proprietary methodology money mastery and life mastery--money coaching based on core lifeskills and the values of: being responsible, disciplined, and charitable. It is based on proven research into childhood education, Ernest's research and observations on the family dynamics of his clients and their children, and his own life story, being poor and struggling to make ends meet while bringing up his three children. If you believe today’s young people need financial literacy education and real-world business skills, JoPeZ Academy is here to help. Sponsorships are also available to provide financial, business, and entrepreneurship education to young people as well as teachers who cannot afford it. Contact us today!

"Mum, when I get a job, I am going to be rich." πŸ’ΌπŸ’Έ

Teenagers always dream about making big money. They see people on TikTok making thousands of dollars and think it is easy.

But as parents, we know the uncomfortable truth.

A bad money habit does not disappear when you grow up. It just gets much more expensive.

If your teen cannot manage a small allowance today, they will not magically know how to manage a huge salary tomorrow.

Think about it:
❓ Do they spend their $50 weekly allowance on Grab rides and bubble tea in just three days?
❓ Is their PayLah balance always at exactly $0.00 by the end of the month?
❓ Do they think "saving money" is something they will only do when they are an adult?

If they spend everything they have now, they will do the exact same thing when they earn $5,000 a month.

At Jopez Academy, we teach parents to test their kids now, while the mistakes are cheap.

The $50 Pilot Test

Before they graduate and face the real world, give them a simple responsibility test.

Give them exactly $50 for their weekend expenses. Ask them to show you a quick plan on how they will spend and save it. If they run out of cash by Saturday night, you do not rescue them.

Letting them fail and feel the pinch with $50 today is the best gift you can give them.

It teaches them:
βœ… Real-world budgeting limits
βœ… The pain of overspending
βœ… That money is a tool to manage, not just a ticket to spend

Parents, what is the biggest thing your teen wastes their $50 on right now?

πŸ‘‡ Comment "FOOD" below and let's talk about it!

β€œMum, everything is so expensive now. My allowance is not enough.” πŸ’Έ

Have you heard this excuse lately?
When our teens run out of money for bubble tea, transport, or movie tickets, our first instinct as parents is to jump in and help them.

We think:

β€œMaybe things really are too expensive today.”

β€œLet me just throw in 20 more bucks.”

But the cold hard truth is:
More money in their pockets will never fix the problem.

Just imagine:

❓ If they can’t handle $50 a week and we give them $100, will they suddenly be more responsible?

❓ If they spend all their money in 3 days, won’t they just spend the larger amount in 4 days?

❓ Are they really lacking money…

or are they lacking a system?

A bad money habit does not disappear when you add more cash.

It just becomes an expensive bad habit.

If they do not learn to budget now, they may use the exact same excuse when they earn a $3,000 salary in the future.

At Jopez Academy, we teach parents one very important rule:

πŸ’‘ Structure matters more than the amount.

Stop the random top-ups.

Instead, introduce the:
πŸ’° Fixed Payday Boundary

You can keep their allowance exactly the same.

But change the rules of how they get it.

For example:

πŸ“… They only get paid on one specific day β€” every Sunday.

If they spend everything by Wednesday?

They wait until the next Sunday.

No advances.

No β€œjust this once” loans from Mum and Dad.

When you stop rescuing them, they are forced to learn:

βœ… How to pace their daily spending

βœ… The real pain of impulse buying

βœ… That the β€œBank of Mum and Dad” is finally closed

Let them feel the pinch of being broke for a few days.

Sometimes, that lesson teaches more than another lecture ever could.

Parents, be honest… πŸ‘€

Have you ever given your teen an β€œemergency top-up” because you felt bad for them?

πŸ‘‡ Comment β€œYES” or β€œNO” below and let’s talk about it!

"Mum, can you send me $20 on my PayLah? I want to watch a movie with my friends." πŸŽŸοΈπŸ’Έ

When teenagers get their allowance, they usually have one simple plan: spend it all right now.

If they have $50, they spend $50.

As parents, it is incredibly frustrating to watch.

Think about it:
❓ Does their allowance disappear on bubble tea and snacks in just a few days?
❓ Do they beg you to buy them a new phone because they have zero savings?
❓ Do they think money is only for buying things for themselves?

Giving them more money will not solve this.

If they cannot control their daily spending now, they will not know how to manage a real salary later.

They do not need a lecture. They need a framework for real life.

At Jopez Academy, we teach parents how to build this exact framework:

The 4 Money Jars System

Every time they receive their allowance or Ang Bao, they must divide it into four clear jars on day one:

SAVE (For big goals like a new phone, game console, or travel. Teaches them how to wait.)

SPEND (For everyday fun like movies, snacks, and small items. Teaches daily control.)

SHARE (For buying gifts, charity, or helping others. Teaches them money is not just for themselves.)

SOW (Not for spending! To learn investing and let money grow. This is their Financial Freedom Account.)

Here is the strict rule: Once the "SPEND" jar is empty, the daily treats stop.

They cannot steal from the "SAVE" jar. They cannot borrow from Mum and Dad.

When you enforce this system, you are giving them the best life training possible. They learn:
βœ… How to control daily expenses
βœ… Delayed gratification and patience
βœ… How to build wealth, not just spend it

Parents, which of these 4 jars is the hardest for your teen to manage right now?

πŸ‘‡ Comment β€œSAVE” below and let’s talk!

I know, dad." I can handle it myself." πŸ™„πŸšͺ

Have you heard this before?

Your teen closes their bedroom door, watches a few TikTok videos, and suddenly acts like they know everything about money.

As they grow older, they naturally want to push us away.
It is easy to feel like our job is done.
❓ Do they roll their eyes when you tell them to save their allowance?
❓ Do they quote a 20-year-old YouTuber instead of listening to your advice?
❓ Do they act completely independent, but still ask you to pay for their Grab rides or movie tickets?

When teenagers act like this, many parents just step back and stop trying."Let them figure it out," we tell ourselves.

But here is the hard truth:
They still need you. Even if they never admit it.

At Jopez Academy, we remind parents of one very important rule:
They may stop listening to your lectures, but they never stop watching your actions.

You are still their number one money coach. You just need to change how you coach.Instead of lecturing them, try the:
βœ… Co-Pilot Budget Challenge

Next time you plan a simple family dinner or a weekend grocery run, hand them the control.

Give them a strict budget (e.g., $100 for family dinner).

Let them decide where to go and what to order. If they overspend, they must figure out how to solve it.

No rescuing.

When you do this, you stop being the "nagging parent" and start being the "coach".

This simple challenge teaches them:
βœ… Real-world budgeting
βœ… Problem-solving under pressure
βœ… That you actually trust them

You do not need to control their every dollar. You just need to guide them safely while they practice.

Parents, let's be honest... who influences your teen’s money habits the most right now?

"I don't check my bank balance. If the app lets me pay, it means I have money." πŸ“±πŸ’Έ

A teenager told me this recently, and I was shocked.
But honestly... it explains everything.

Today's teens do not have a "spending" problem. They have a "system" problem.

They live in a world where money is completely invisible. They just double-click a button, scan their face, or tap their phone.

Because of this, we see the "spend first, think later" behavior everywhere:

❓ Do they tap their phone for a $7 bubble tea without thinking twice?
❓ Do they just check their Shopee cart because there is a β€œflash sale”?
❓ Do they run out of their monthly allowance in the second week?

As parents, our first reaction is to lecture them.
"You are wasting money! Do you think money grows on trees?"

But a lecture is not a system.
If they do not have a system to manage their money, they will just follow their feelings. And their feelings will always tell them to buy now.

At Jopez Academy, we teach parents to stop scolding and start building systems.

Before they get their next allowance, help them set up the:

3 Jars System (Save, Spend, Share)

On the very first day they receive their money, they must divide it.

10% goes to the "Save" jar immediately.
A small amount goes to β€œShare”.
The rest stays in "Spend".

Once the "Spend" jar is empty, it is empty.
No advances. No emergency top-ups from Mum and Dad.

When you do this, they learn the most important lessons:
βœ… Budgeting
βœ… Delayed gratification
βœ… How to control their impulses

Let them make a $50 mistake today, so they do not make a $50,000 mistake when they are adults.

Parents, if you look at your teen right now...

"Mum, if I study hard, will I get a good job and be rich?" πŸ“šπŸ’

Have your kids asked you this yet?

If you are honest, you might not know what to say.

Because today, parents know the uncomfortable truth:

❓ A degree no longer guarantees a high salary.
❓ Knowing the right people (connections) often opens more doors than a perfect exam score.
❓ Most of the science and math formulas they memorize today will be forgotten by age 20.

As a parent, it is completely normal to feel conflicted.
If the old rules do not work anymore, why do we force them to study so hard?

Here is the mindset shift we teach at Jopez Academy:

We do not study for the syllabus. We study for the character.

When your child struggles with a very hard math problem, they are not just learning math. They are training their brain.

Studying hard is just a training ground to develop:
βœ… Discipline (doing the work even when they feel lazy)
βœ… Problem-solving (figuring out hard things without giving up)
βœ… Resilience (bouncing back from a failed test)

Connections might get them the job interview. But it is character, discipline, and grit that will keep them in the room.

And it is the exact same with money.

We do not teach them to work hard and save money just to hoard cash in a bank.
We teach them to save so they have something much better:

Choices.
Independence.
The freedom to say "No" to a bad boss or a toxic job in the future.

We prepare them not for the exam, but for life.

What do you think? Is character more important than exam grades today?

Every financial habit starts somewhere and for many children, it starts with curiosity.

At our recent Know Your Money Workshop, children explored money through interactive games, discussions, movement, and practical activities that make financial concepts easier to understand and remember.

Thank you to all the parents who joined us and entrusted us with being part of your child's financial learning journey. We hope everyone left with new ideas, meaningful conversations, and a little more confidence about money.

We're looking forward to welcoming even more families at our next workshop.

"Mum, what is the point of putting money in this jar if I am never allowed to touch it?"

If you have ever tried teaching your child to save, you have probably heard this exact question.

And honestly? They have a point.

To a child, money has only one purpose: to be spent right now. When we tell them to "just save it for the future," it feels like a punishment.

They think:
❓ Why should I give up my McDonald's meal today?
❓ Why can't I buy those Roblox Robux right now?
❓ Where is this money actually going?

If saving feels like throwing money into a black hole, they will hate doing it.

Before we can teach them discipline, we must teach them purpose.

At Jopez Academy, we teach parents a simple mindset shift:

Never let them save for "nothing".

Instead of a generic "Savings Jar", introduce the:

Target Savings Rule

Help them pick a specific, exciting goal. Let them print a picture of it and stick it on the jar.

A new Nintendo Switch game.
A pair of branded sneakers.
A ticket to Universal Studios.

Now, when they put a $10 note into the jar, they are not "losing" money. They are buying a piece of their goal.

They are no longer just keeping money away. They are actively learning:
βœ… Delayed gratification
βœ… Goal setting
βœ… The real value of patience

A child who knows exactly why they are saving will stop asking to touch the money until the goal is reached.

Parents, what is the hardest part about getting your kids to save?

πŸ‘‡ Comment "THE GOAL" if your kids need a target, or "THE TEMPTATION" if they can't resist spending!

Is your teenager ready to manage money confidently before they start earning their own income?

πŸ’° Most teenagers learn algebra in school... but very few are taught how to manage money.

What if your child could start building healthy money habits before entering adulthood?

Our Grow With Money Workshop is designed for youths aged 12–16, where they'll learn practical financial concepts through engaging activities, discussions, and real-life scenarios not just lectures.

If you have a teen who's ready to become more confident with money, this workshop is a great place to start.
