If you’re a W-2 employee, the scrubs, license fees and mileage you pay for yourself can’t come off your federal income tax return, and that rule is now permanent.

On your federal income tax return, nurses can deduct up to $12,500 a year of qualifying overtime from 2025 through 2028. Georgia went its own way with a $1,750 state overtime exclusion for 2026 through 2028. So your federal return and your Georgia state income tax return treat the same overtime hours differently.

How you’re paid doesn’t decide whether you get a tax break. It decides which ones you get.

A C corp's profit gets taxed twice before it reaches a shareholder's pocket.

The corporation pays tax on its income under Form 1120, and shareholders pay tax again on dividends or on gains from selling stock. Selling the company's assets instead of its stock changes which layer of tax applies and to whom, and the two paths aren't interchangeable after the fact.

Which structure a sale takes is usually decided well before a buyer is even at the table, not during the closing itself.
Double taxation isn't avoidable in a C corp. Which transaction structure gets you there is.

An S corp doesn't get to skip paychecks for its own shareholders.

Shareholder-employees are required to take a reasonable salary before any distribution, which is what keeps payroll tax and income distribution in balance. The return itself, Form 1120-S, flows through to each shareholder's K-1, and international activity can trigger Schedules K-2 and K-3 under rules introduced by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

Skipping or underpaying the salary piece is one of the more common findings when an S corp gets a second look. It's a compensation question, not just a filing one. ‼️

Distributions are optional. A reasonable salary isn't.

Ten offices across Georgia, Utah, Florida and Puerto Rico and growing. One team filing in 40+ states.

Your income doesn't stop at a state line, and your tax team shouldn't either. We work remote-first, so when your income crosses states, the people reviewing your file are all looking at the same picture.

The offices are local. Secure document exchange and year-round planning work the same from every one of them.💡

A partnership doesn't pay its own tax bill. Its partners do, one K-1 at a time. 💡

Partnership income, deductions, and credits pass through to each partner via a K-1 rather than being taxed at the entity level. Dissolving one means a final Form 1065, individual partner reporting on the resulting gains or losses, and possible recapture. Partners with foreign activity may also need Form 5471 or Form 8865, plus Schedules K-2 and K-3.

👉A partner's personal return can't be finished accurately until the partnership's own return is, which makes timing between the two part of the job, not an afterthought.

The partnership files once. Every partner still reconciles it against their own return.

A family business can survive one generation of decisions and still not survive the handoff to the next.

Advisory here covers succession planning, leadership development for the next generation, governance structures that head off conflict, and aligning ownership among family members and any non-family operators brought into the business. For families above $30M in net worth, that usually means a longer runway: a 5 to 10 year view instead of a single tax year.

Leadership transitions and inheritance planning both take years to set up properly. Neither works well when it's decided the year it's needed.

More moving pieces make coordination more important.

Taxable income and cash in the bank are not always the same thing for an owner with pass-through entities. An S corporation can report income to the owner even when the cash distribution tells a different story, which can make quarterly estimates harder to judge from bank balances alone. Compensation also affects the owner-level picture, while expenses recorded in the wrong entity can distort the books being used for the projection.

👉A coordinated review ties the estimates back to the current entity results before the returns are prepared.

The goal is a tax process that matches the complexity already on the table. That's Fusion CPA's specialty!

An operating company, real estate entities, investments, and trusts can all affect the same personal tax return.

The operating company may produce wages or K-1 income, while a real estate LLC can report rental activity or pass-through income separately. Depending on the trust, distributions or retained income can change what ultimately reaches the individual return. That is why quarterly estimates are often more useful when they start with the combined projection rather than one entity’s books.

A coordinated review maps those flows before the returns are prepared and keeps the planning conversation tied to the owner’s full financial structure.

More entities do not necessarily require more advisors. They do require one view of the owner.

A W-2 with the wrong wages on it doesn't fix itself when you file.

When an employer issues an incorrect or missing W-2, the return doesn't just get filed on faith: Form 4852 lets a taxpayer report the actual wages and withholding as a substitute, and Form 1040-X corrects a return that's already been filed on the wrong numbers. Personal returns can also carry multi-state residency questions, foreign filings, and credits that change if the underlying wage or withholding numbers move.

Correcting a W-2 error after the return is already filed usually takes longer and draws more scrutiny than catching it before.

The return follows the W-2. It shouldn't follow it blindly.
