TAX UPDATE – GILGIT-BALTISTAN HOTELS
5% HOTEL / BED LEVY – WHAT HOTEL OWNERS & TOURISTS NEED TO KNOW
An important tax update for hotels, guest houses, tourists and tourism businesses in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Under the Gilgit-Baltistan Hotel Regulation and Levy Act, 2020, a 5% levy is chargeable on room rent per lodging unit per day.
Example:
Hotel Room Rent = Rs. 20,000
5% Hotel Levy = Rs. 1,000
But who actually bears this tax?
The guest/customer pays the levy.
The hotel/guest house collects it.
90% of the levy collected is deposited into the Gilgit-Baltistan Consolidated Fund.
10% can be retained by the hotel/guest-house owner as an incentive, as provided in the Act.
