The SEConomics May 2026 Issue features key developments in the global equities and fixed income markets, the country’s cash remittances, and updates on the net foreign direct investment (FDI).

Global equities advanced in May as investor sentiment improved with easing Middle East tensions and the expected reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Locally, market capitalization rose 0.98% to PHP19.29 trillion while the PSEi slipped 1.11% to 5,768.76. Meanwhile, the global fixed income market also recorded gains led by corporate bonds. Local yield curve shifted upward across all tenors, signaling higher borrowing costs and lower bond prices.

On the domestic macroeconomic front, cash remittances from overseas Filipino (OF) workers reached USD2.72 billion in April 2026, bringing cumulative remittances for January to April 2026 to USD11.40 billion, up 2.61% year-on-year. Meanwhile, cumulative net foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows declined by 17.10% to USD7.79 billion in 2025 from USD9.40 billion in 2024 with projected recovery arising from institutional reforms.
