Rabies is a deadly viral disease that affects the brain and the nervous system of not only animals, but also humans. It is a zoonotic tropical disease most commonly transmitted through the bites and scratches of infected animals, with 99% of human rabies cases coming from dogs. Once clinical symptoms appear and the virus infects the central nervous system, rabies is fatal in 100% of cases. Even though it is fatal, it is also 100% preventable through proper observation and timely vaccination.
The Philippines continues to face challenges in eliminating rabies. In 2024, the Department of Health (DOH) recorded 426 deaths due to rabies. Furthermore, a total of 1750 Filipinos have died due to rabies from 2020 to 2024. From January to September of 2025 alone, rabies cases reached 260. Although the number is lower than the previous year, it remains alarming since these deaths could have been prevented through simple awareness, immediate medical consultation, and responsible pet vaccination.
Under Executive Order No. 84, March is declared ๐๐๐๐ข๐๐ฌ ๐๐ฐ๐๐ซ๐๐ง๐๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ก in the Philippines. This month highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership, including regular vaccinations of pets. It also emphasizes the importance of awareness when at risk for rabies and the immediate seeking of medical consultation.
Let every month, not only March, serve as a reminder that while rabies is almost always fatal, it is easily preventable.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a preventable and curable disease; however, it remains as one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, threatening public health. Statistically, the Philippines accounted for 6.8 percent of the 10.7 million TB cases globally in 2024, earning its rank as third among the eight highest TB-burden countries.
On March 24, we celebrate the annual ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฅ๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฒ to raise awareness on the health and economic concerns of the communicable disease. With the theme, โ๐๐๐! ๐พ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐
๐ป๐ฉ!,โ we invite every individual to join our call on putting a stop to the spread of TB.
This is not just a battle to prevent disease, but also a fight to prolong life and promote health.

๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐๐ซ๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก ๐๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ก is observed every February pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 559 (s. 2004), highlighting the importance of maintaining good oral health as an essential part of overall well-being. This annual observance aims to raise awareness on the prevention and control of oral diseases and to promote accessible and equitable oral health care for all Filipinos.
Oral diseases such as dental caries (tooth decay), gum disease, and oral infections remain among the most common health concerns affecting both children and adults in the Philippines. Poor oral health can cause pain, discomfort, difficulty in eating and speaking, and may even contribute to more serious systemic conditions when left untreated. Despite being largely preventable, many cases persist due to limited awareness, unhealthy dietary habits, to***co use, and inadequate oral hygiene practices.
The good news is that most oral health problems can be prevented through simple yet consistent habits โ brushing teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, limiting sugary food and drinks, avoiding to***co, and visiting the dentist regularly for check-ups and early treatment.
This month serves as a reminder that oral health is a vital part of public health. As advocates of health promotion and disease prevention, let us empower our communities with the knowledge and practices needed to achieve healthier smiles.
A healthy mouth reflects a healthy body โ letโs work together to build brighter smiles for a healthier nation.

The second week of February is observed as ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐๐ฐ๐๐ซ๐๐ง๐๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐๐๐๐ค ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ซ๐๐ฏ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ ๐๐๐ฑ๐ฎ๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐จ๐ข๐ญ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, as declared under Presidential Proclamation No. 731 (s. 1996). This observance highlights one of the most underreported yet deeply concerning forms of abuse affecting children in the Philippines.
Today, child sexual abuse and exploitation rampantly occur in ๐จ๐ง๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ฌ, alongside childrenโs increasingly unsupervised access to the internet. Reports from organizations such as UNICEF point to the prevalence of online grooming, manipulation, and coercion, where children are pressured into exploitative situations. Despite this, many cases remain unreported. Children may not know where or how to seek help, or may fear speaking up. Some may not yet even recognize that what they are experiencing is abuse.
This Awareness Week reminds us of the importance of empowering children through education, especially by teaching them about body autonomy, consent, and digital safety. At the same time, adults and communities must model appropriate boundaries and responsible behavior, creating environments where children feel safe to speak up. By strengthening the youth with the knowledge to recognize warning signs and patterns of child sexual abuse and exploitation, we help ensure their protection both online and offline.
Protecting children requires vigilance. Be attentive to their environments, online activities, and behavioral changes. Their protection starts with us. ๐ฉต

In the Philippines, more than 150,000 new cancer cases are detected each year, landing itself the second leading cause of death in the country.
Cancer is not just a personal battle, it is a public health concern shaped by access to healthcare, environmental conditions, lifestyle choices, and early detection. ๐ฅ

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, also known as ๐๐๐๐, is a chronic condition caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). HIV damages and weakens the cells of your immune system which makes it difficult to fight off other infections. When HIV has damaged your immune system enough, the disease progresses to AIDS, which is the final and most serious stage of an HIV infection.
The Philippines is currently experiencing the fastest-growing HIV epidemic in Asia. According to WHO, the number of HIV cases in the Philippines went up by 550% from 4,400 in 2010 to 29,600 in 2024 with around 252,800 Filipinos estimated to be living with HIV in 2025. Every day, at least 57 people are diagnosed with the disease. Despite the growing pandemic, prevention efforts are severely underfunded constituting only 6% or 211 million pesos of the total 3.6 billion peso HIV spending in 2023. This gap has only worsened due to the recent US funding pause which threatens vital prevention programs and community-led responses.
There is currently no cure for HIV, therefore prevention is most prioritized. If you are not yet infected, there are many ways of prevention. It is important to observe proper condom use during in*******se to prevent infection. You may also use Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) if you are at high risk of HIV infection. If you are sexually active, it is also important to get yourself tested regularly to constantly monitor your health. Non-profit organizations, such as LoveYourself Philippines, offer free HIV testing, counseling and treatment. Community clinics also offer free HIV testing and can provide PrEP if necessary.
