Every year it's the same story. December flies by in a blur of end-of-year drinks and last-minute jobs. You close the doors, head to the beach, and switch off properly for the first time in months.

Then mid-January arrives. The inbox is quiet, the bank balance is lighter than you'd like, and GST and provisional tax are both due on the 15th.

None of that is a surprise.
It happens every single year.
Which is exactly why you can plan for it - and October is the time to do it.

👉 We've got a new blog out over on The Accounts Department website; head on over and check it out (or comment BLOG for the link).

Q4 has a way of making everyone feel like they need to cram the whole year into the last three months.

🔸 Finish every project
🔸 Hit every target
🔸 Be everything to everyone before the break

You don't need to sprint to the line. You need to know which three things genuinely matter between now and Christmas and give yourself permission to let the rest wait until February.

The same goes for next year. Most businesses walk into January with a vague sense of 'we'll figure it out' and spend the first quarter catching up. Imagine starting 2027 already knowing your numbers, your priorities and what you want the year to look like.

That's what a planning session with us is for. We'll look back at how 2026 actually went, set clear goals for 2027, and map out the numbers to back them up - so you head into the break with clarity, not a to-do list.

𝗧𝗔𝗗 𝗧𝗶𝗽: Plan Your Christmas Cash Flow Now!

Here's how the summer squeeze usually plays out 👇

🔸 Clients slow down paying in December.
🔸 The team takes holiday pay.
🔸 You close for a couple of weeks.
🔸 Then 15 January rolls around.

GST and provisional tax are both due - and you're coming back to a quiet inbox and a lighter bank account.

None of that is a surprise. It happens every year. Which means you can plan for it.

The best time to fix a January cash gap is October.
Book 20 minutes with us and we'll map it out with you.

The clocks have gone forward, the evenings are longer, and somewhere a shopping centre has already put up a Christmas tree. Rude, but not wrong 😂

October is the quiet sweet spot of the year.

Far enough from December that you can still make real decisions - close enough that those decisions actually matter.

👉 Get a few things sorted now and the summer break stays a break, not a January cash scramble 😊

Christmas shutdown has a sneaky habit of arriving faster than expected. 🎄

One minute you’re flat out wrapping up jobs and chasing invoices. The next, you’re trying to enjoy a summer break while quietly wondering whether there’s enough cash sitting there to cover everything January brings.

The good news? **October is early enough to do something about it.**

Our latest blog walks you through a practical summer shutdown cash flow checklist, including:

✔️ planning for holiday pay and ongoing expenses
✔️ mapping your cash flow over the shutdown period
✔️ getting invoices out and chasing overdue accounts early
✔️ ring-fencing money for tax
✔️ making sure you’ve got enough of a buffer for those quieter weeks

A little planning now can mean a lot less financial stress when you’re meant to be switching off.

A mid-year review isn't a full strategic overhaul.

🙅‍♀️ It's not a retreat, a whiteboard session or a five-year plan rewrite.

It's twenty honest minutes with your numbers and a few blunt questions.

Grab a coffee, close the inbox, and be honest with yourself on these 🧡

And if any of these made you wince a little, that's useful information. That wince is the whole point of the exercise.

Spring has a way of convincing everyone they should be doing more: growing faster, launching the thing, becoming a whole new business owner overnight.

Resist it.

You don't need a five-year plan rewritten by Friday.

You need one honest look at where things actually stand at the halfway mark, and one clear decision about what deserves your attention before the year quietly runs out on you.

That's not hustle.
That's just paying attention, which, frankly, is rarer.

Six months down, six to go.

This is the point where 'I'll deal with it at year-end' quietly turns into a problem you deal with at year-end, badly.

Three honest questions, no judgment:

1️⃣ Revenue: Ahead, behind, or bang on where you expected to be back in March?

2️⃣ Expenses: Sitting where you planned, or has something crept up on you over winter without an invite?

3️⃣ Cash flow: Do you have 8 to 12 weeks of real visibility, or are you still just white-knuckling it off the bank balance?

Twenty minutes with your numbers now beats a much less fun conversation with us in Q4.

Don't just note it and move on. Pick the one number or decision that's bugging you most, and do something about it this week.

That might mean:

🟣 Adjusting a budget line that's blown out

🟣 Chasing the invoices that are quietly wrecking your cash flow

🟣 Having the pricing conversation you've been putting off

🟣 Booking twenty minutes with us to sanity-check a big decision before you make it

You don't need to fix everything at once. You need to stop guessing about the one thing that matters most right now.
