👉 If it’s work the previous owner could have done, IRD assumes you would’ve just paid more for the property.

IRD looks at things like:
• How soon the work was done
• Condition at purchase
• Whether it was fit to rent
• Impact on purchase price
• Nature and extent of the work

🎁 Giving your employees a gift voucher?

It’s worth knowing the tax treatment before you hand it over!

🛍️ Retailer-specific vouchers like New World, Farmers or Mitre 10 are generally subject to FBT, although the de minimis exemption may apply.

💳 General-use gift cards such as some Visa or Mastercard cards are generally treated as employment income and go through PAYE.

💵 Cash or cash-redeemable vouchers are also treated as employment income and processed through payroll.

Since April 2025, employers can also elect to apply FBT treatment to all gift cards and vouchers, which can simplify things for businesses that provide them regularly.

So before you gift it, check how it needs to be taxed! 👀
