A couple of weeks ago our Director Michelle spent an afternoon judging Business Idea at The Lion Foundation YES Pitch Day, run by Auckland Business Chamber.

There were 17 student teams, all pitching their first ever business ideas. Some of their thinking put grown adult pitches to shame.

Judging comes down to five things:

👉🏾Business Idea - Not "what do you sell" but "what problem does this solve, and for who."
👉🏾Unique Value Proposition - Why you, not the business down the road doing the same thing.
👉🏾Vision - Where this is going, not just what it does today.
👉🏾Goals - The measurable version of the vision.
👉🏾Values - What you won't compromise on.

If you've been running your business for five, ten, twenty years, when did you last actually sit down and pressure-test your answers to these?

We recently attended BuildNZ, the Future of Housing Summit.

Right now, regional businesses are doing well, thanks more to their networks than their size.

However, many NZ businesses are small and often run by just one person and a small team. That setup works well for daily operations. But when it comes to big infrastructure projects, you need more than just willingness. You need a team and the right experience to get the job done. Some of the entities that have struggled did so because they took on too much risk that they probably shouldn't have.

So before you take on a bigger job, think about how much risk you’re comfortable with. Can your business handle it on its own? Or would it be better to partner with someone else and share the risk, instead of taking it all on yourself?

Also, know your numbers and forecasts. Construction is a shortage industry "shortage of work or shortage of workers"
