This would be a spectacular U turn if implemented. Whilst a nice sounding policy, and as the author noted/ Grant Robertson previously hinted at, the full benefits rarely flow through to the consumer as the majority of the “savings” are kept be the seller. It also increases the compliance costs for businesses which invariably get passed on.

It’s being a busy week in tax with the Budget data release . It appears we were very close to a range of capital/wealth taxes before they got pulled quite late in the piece. There are also questions over IRDs ability to deliver suitable compliance programs given the significant reductions in Investigative staff (now called Customer Compliance Staff)
