Most businesses don't wake up and decide:
"Let's become non-compliant today."
It usually happens gradually.
A deadline gets missed.
A document can't be found.
A filing gets postponed.
Then another.
Until the problem becomes expensive.
Three habits can make a big difference:
✔ Know what applies to your business
✔ Track your deadlines
✔ Keep your records organised
Which one do you see businesses struggle with most?

Which of these does your business actually have?
Most Nigerian SMEs are operating without at least one of these documents, and don't realise it until an audit, a funding application, or a legal dispute surfaces the gap.
Swipe through for the essential documents every Nigerian SME must have. 👆

Nobody tells new business owners about this one.
You registered your business with CAC. You got the certificate. You felt official.
But here's what most founders don't find out until it's too late:
Every registered Nigerian company must file Annual Returns with CAC, starting 18 months after incorporation, then every year after that by June 30.
Miss it? CAC can strike your company off the register.
Getting reinstated after a strike-off is expensive, slow, and sometimes impossible depending on how long it's been.
This isn't the only hidden obligation either. Combined with NRS filings, PAYE remittances, pension contributions, and NHF, the compliance calendar for a registered Nigerian business is fuller than most founders know.
Save this. Tag a business owner who registered recently and might not know this. 👇

Business is making money. Sales are growing. Customers are paying.
But your personal account is looking at you like:
“Omo, where did all the money go?” 😭
Sometimes the problem isn't that your business isn't making money.
It's that there's no clear system for owner pay, expenses, profit, and cash flow.
If you're taking money whenever you need it or reinvesting every naira back into the business, you may be growing the business while constantly struggling personally.
Your business should pay you too.
The goal isn't to take everything out. It's to create a structure that tells you what you can afford to pay yourself while keeping the business healthy.
Be honest: salary or random withdrawals? 👀

Your staff sees this number every month.
Do you know exactly how it's calculated? 👇
Net pay = what your employee actually takes home after all statutory deductions.
Here's what comes out before they get paid:
✦ PAYE — income tax deducted at source (Nigeria Tax Act 2025 rates apply from Jan 2026)
✦ Pension — 8% employee contribution (PenCom)
✦ NHF — 2.5% (National Housing Fund)
✦ NHIS — employee health insurance contribution
Get any of these wrong, and you're either underpaying the government or overpaying employees at the government's expense.
Both have consequences.
Save this. Share with a business owner who does payroll manually. 🙏

You built the business.
You work in it.
You make the decisions.
But here's the question many founders avoid:
Are you actually paying yourself properly?
If you're constantly dipping into the business account whenever you need money, your business and personal finances are probably too close for comfort.
A proper owner-pay system gives you clarity.
You know what you're earning.
The business knows what it can afford.
And your books stay cleaner.
Be honest: are you paying yourself a salary or just taking money when you need it? 👇
