While economists are positive on the impact of the easing of China’s restrictions on the Malaysian economy, fund managers believe investor sentiment on the Bursa Malaysia will be driven by domestic factors and relative valuations.
According to Sunway University economics professor Dr Yeah Kim Leng, China and Hong Kong combined absorbed 19.7% of Malaysia’s total exports in 2022, down from 21.7% in 2021.
“China’s exit from the zero-Covid restrictions in January 2023 will boost its growth from 3% in 2022 to 5% to 5.5% projected for this year.

While the increase in the overnight policy rate (OPR) in September led to lower recorded loan applications in the banking sector, the lenders could be seeing stronger interest income growth in the coming quarters, says RHB Research.
According to the research firm, Bank Negara's third consecutive rate hike for the year increased the average lending rate by 19bps month-on-month (m-o-m), which softened the general appetite for financing.
System loan applications were seen falling 7% m-o-m, although it remained 35% higher on a year-on-year (y-o-y) comparison.

The ringgit opened lower against the US dollar for the fifth consecutive day today as investors paid close attention to the US Federal Reserve (Fed) decision later today, dealers said.
At 9 am, the local currency fell to 4.7420/7450 against the greenback from Tuesday's close of 4.7345/7375.
ActivTrades trader Dyogenes Rodrigues Diniz said the US dollar was once again rising against the ringgit ahead of the US interest rate decision on Wednesday.
"The Fed is expected to raise interest rates by 0.75 per cent. If that hike materialises, it will be the fourth consecutive increase of that size. A rise in line with expectations would likely see the dollar fall at first, as the market has already widely priced in this increase.

Pavilion Damansara Heights will open in May 2023, with over 70% of its retail space to date already committed by tenants.
Kuala Lumpur Pavilion Sdn Bhd chief executive officer (retail) Datuk Joyce Yap said the mall will eventually have around 380 retail outlets, making it “well-placed” to serve diverse needs.
“The broad reopening of our borders and the return of foreign tourists to Malaysia bodes well for Pavilion Damansara Heights Mall and our tenants, as we get ready for our soft opening in May 2023,” she said at an unveiling event here yesterday.
“It is a relief to see that in the Malaysia Retail Industry Report for September 2022, the country’s retail industry recorded a growth rate of 62.5% in retail sales in the second quarter of this year, versus 18.3% in the first quarter,” Yap added.
