Due to the adverse impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ukraine-Russia war, global supply chain challenges, complex nature of large infrastructure projects among others, there has a been a sharp rise in the number of disputes in long-term infrastructure projects across the globe.
In the African landscape, as government seeks to pursue more infrastructure development through Public-Private Partnerships, the focus should be providing comfort to the private sector that there is in place a speedy, efficient, independent and amicable dispute resolution framework that protects the interests of all the parties involved in the project.
As part of our objective to continuously build the capacity of the alumni of the Africa Project Finance Program, we are excited to host Benjamin Ng'eno, a Deputy Counsel at the International Court of Arbitration, a dispute resolution wing of the International Chamber of Commerce as he explores practical aspects of dispute resolution in Africa's infrastructure projects.
Through the session, we hope to understand how to avoid infrastructure project disputes, which laws should be relied upon when disputes arise, practical cases of disputes in Africa and the role of the International Chamber of Commerce in dispute resolution in Africa.

Most of the governments in Africa have lined up ambitious infrastructure project pipelines they intend to implement either through public finances or with the private sector through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs).
Unfortunately, there is no commensurate investment in building practical capacity of the locals to champion these projects. And where foreign consultants are brought in to manage these projects, there lacks a solid and practical plan to ensure transfer of knowledge and skills to the local teams.
We are alive to this gap and have taken up on this challenge to identify, nurture and equip university graduates in Africa with an all-round skill-set required to excel and build a career in the infrastructure space.
The Graduate Infrastructure Program is a six months infrastructure mentorship program that moulds university graduates and those that want to build a career in the infrastructure space. It comprises of 4 months of practical training, one month of mentorship and one month of internship at the Hub.
We can guarantee that the graduates of this Program will have what it takes to immediately join mid-level management of infrastructure-oriented entities in the African market. More than ever before, employing entities do not have to invest in training their entry level employees as this would have been addressed at the Hub.
Are you a university graduate who wants to build a career in the infrastructure space? You can send us your CV to [email protected] and apply to join the first intake which kicks off in July 2022.

One of the biggest impediment to the flow of private sector investment into long term infrastructure projects in Africa is corruption. Some public officials have skewed feasibility reports so that specific projects that benefit their self-interests could be implemented. On the other hand, project sponsors have overstated project benefits and understated project costs so as to have their projects approved by contracting authorities.
Some projects have suffered time and cost overruns because contracting authorities' officials demanded hefty bribes before they could approve designs and payments of the projects. Some contractors have been forced to compromise the quality of the project due to the need to share the minimal margins of the project with public officials managing the projects.
All these corrupt actions deny the majority of the citizens the benefits of quality infrastructure. Unfortunately, nobody wants to talk about this big elephant in the room.
On Wednesday, the Africa Project Finance Program Alumni Association will be hosting Anton Krause, the Director of Global Infrastructure Anti-Corruption Centre (GIACC)-South Africa as we explore ways of tracking corruption in infrastructure projects by leveraging on technology.

Emphasis has been put to ensure the training that is delivered by a Faculty comprising of infrastructure industry experts is practical and resonates with some of the challenges facing the African continent.
A visit to an ongoing infrastructure project provides a platform to enhance the practical understanding of some of the critical issues and decisions around infrastructure project finance and PPP.
You have a chance now to register to join other African professionals in the 4th Cohort of the Program which kicks off on 11th October 2021. More information and registration is on the link https://lnkd.in/eiR_z5B

The Water & Sanitation sector one of the most critical sectors that is still not attracting sufficient investment especially from the private sector.
The opportunity to visit the ongoing construction of the Thwake Multipurpose Dam by the professionals pursuing the 3rd Cohort will provide a platform to discuss, critic and brainstorm jointly with the Government Ministry officials, Program's Expert Speakers and previous graduates of the Program on ways we can be able to enhance the bankability of future projects in the sector.
The discussions will be critical in enhancing the practical knowledge of the participants especially in the emerging issues and trends in the structuring, financing, implementation and management of mega projects in the Water & Sanitation sector.

How can governments and contracting agencies of governments learn from previous challenges encountered in the planning, implementation and management of PPP projects and forge a better strategy going forward that will ensure success of future PPP projects?
Today we look forward to learning of past experiences in Ghana; the delayed Accra - Kumasi highway unsolicited proposal which has been delayed for more than 11 years and how governments can recalibrate their legal frameworks to avoid such incidences.
