Human Life Value (HLV) is a way to estimate the financial value of the income your family depends on.
A simple formula often used is:
HLV = (Annual Income − Personal Expenses) × Remaining Working Years
For example, if you earn ₹10 lakh a year, spend ₹3 lakh on yourself, and have 25 working years left:
₹7 lakh x 25 = ₹1.75 crore (before other adjustments).
Why does it matter?
✔ Helps estimate an appropriate life insurance cover
✔ Considers your family's future financial needs
✔ Can account for liabilities, living expenses, and long-term goals
One limitation: HLV is a useful starting point, but it cannot fully capture future lifestyle changes or every financial objective.
As income, responsibilities, and goals evolve, your HLV may change too.
